Painted songs : continuity and change in an Indian folk art by Thomas Kaiser( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For over 2000 years and until just a few decades ago artists traveled throughout India, using painted picture scrolls to spread stories from the great Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, as well as a wealth of stories about regional Gods and heroes and moral tales, amongst the mostly illiterate rural population. These artists were the creators and bearers of an art form which spread from India across China to Japan, and westward to the Mediterranean region. In the hands of the painters and singers, the picture scrolls became a portable cinema, projection screens for mythical knowledge and an incentive to listen to the songs whilst looking at the scrolls. Political changes, technical innovation and social turmoil in the twentieth century ushered in profound changes to oral art forms. As their tradition lost significance, the Indian scroll-painting artists also lost their public and their income. Two Bengali picture-scroll traditions still defy adverse conditions; however, whereas the 'patua' rose to the challenge, the 'jadopatia' failed and their tradition is in terminal decline

Devotion : image, recitation, and celebration of the Vessantara Epic in Northeast Thailand by Thomas Kaiser( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Devotion presents, for the very first time, a selection of six full-length Vessantara Jataka picture scrolls and explores a contemporary multimedia celebration of an ancient Buddhist text through in-depth essays. Provides the reader with an exciting journey into unknown stories and narrative structure. The Vessantara Jataka is the tale of Buddha's last life, before he was reborn as the historical Buddha 2,500 years ago. In this earlier existence as Prince Vessantara he demonstrated evidence of the highest virtue that constitutes an enlightened one, namely generosity. Vessantara gave away everything dear to him in the climactic scene of the story even his wife and children. In North-East Thailand the Vessantara tale is celebrated annually as Bun Phra Wet. Vessantara cloths form the visual framework for this festival; they are hand-painted scrolls, which can reach lengths of up to one hundred meters. This book accompanies an exhibition, to be held in the Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich, June 20, 2017 to April 4, 2018

WegZeichen : japanische Kult- und Pilgerbilder : die Sammlung Wilfried Spinner (1854-1918) = Tokens of the path : Japanese devotional and pilgrimage images : the Wilfried Spinner collection (1854-1918) by Tomoe Steineck( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in German and English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drinking skills : milk, cassava beer, kava, palm wine, tea, rice beer by Renzo Duin( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich was renovated between 2012 and 2014 and so the museum was closed during that time. This prompted us to reflect on the significance of our collections, to present the results of those reflections at the reopening, and to share our thoughts with our visitors ... The exhibition 'Drinking Skills: Milk, Palm Wine, Cassava Beer, Kava, Tea, Rice Beer' aimed to present our visitors with the results of an expedition into the storerooms, introducing them via the artefacts to the worlds of knwoledge associated with Swiss alpine farming and milk, sour milk in Africa, palm wine in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, cassava beer in Amazonia, kava in Oceania, Tibetetan butter tea, Japanese tea culture, and rice beer in the larger Himalayan region."--Foreword, p.
