Facsimiles of two letters sent by John A. Thompson to his wife shortly after his arrival in Washington, D.C. In the first letter, dated February 6, 1872, Thompson writes of his travels to Washington, of the high costs in Washington, of proceedings regarding his case ("the law making here goes very slow"), and of staying with friends from California. The second later is dated March 7, 1872, and again describes the slowness of proceedings, the help of Senator Nye of Nevada, and Thompson's lodgings. It also includes a note to his son, Arthur
