L'incertitude domine le débat sur les nouveaux territoires urbains, souvent perçus par défaut : non-ville, a-t-on dit durablement dans des revues savantes. La volatilité du vocabulaire qui désigne ces espaces est particulièrement sensible au cours des périodes d'extension urbaine forte et rapide, comme la fin du XIXe siècle ou les cinquante dernières années du XXe siècle. Les mots tentent alors leur chance et leur succès dépend de leur degré d'appropriation sociale. Les mots de la ville s'expriment dans des registres aussi bien universels que très localisés ; leurs références combinent des éléments géographiques, économiques et sociaux qui se traduisent par des termes techniques, des appellations populaires ou des toponymes. Invecchiare bene non dipende solo da buone condizioni di salute e da disponibilità economiche sufficienti: un significativo aiuto al benessere complessivo proviene anche dalla possibilità di non recidere i legami significativi con la propria storia personale e familiare e ciò coincide quasi sempre con la possibilità di rimanere ad abitare nella propria casa. Le politiche sociali attuate in Italia non sono però riuscite a tutelare sufficientemente le condizioni materiali dell'abitare e a sostenere la domiciliarità di chi non accede ai servizi assistenziali. Il libro, partendo dai risultati di un'indagine condotta tra gli anziani residenti nel centro storico genovese raccoglie contributi di professionisti e studiosi di differenti discipline (dal sociologo all'architetto, all'urbanista, al geriatra, all'assistente sociale) chiamate a fornire il loro apporto specifico in tema di requisiti tecnici e organizzativi che consentano una duratura e confortevole permanenza delle persone anziane nel proprio alloggio e nell'ambiente abituale di vita.
