Handbook of parent training : parents as co-therapists for children's behavior problems by Charles E Schaefer( Book )

25 editions published between 1989 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 820 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Handbook of Parent Training, Second Edition offers a unique opportunity to learn about the latest empirical findings and clinical developments in parent training from more than 30 leading innovators in the field. Featuring all new chapters, this thoroughly revised and updated edition covers issues that have emerged in recent years as crucial to practitioners who work with children. Readers will find the latest information on such topics as primary prevention of conduct disorder; video techniques for oppositional-defiant disorder; reducing tantrums; preventing child abuse and neglect; parent training for divorced parents; overcoming children's homework problems; reducing parent-adolescent conflict; breakthroughs in training for special needs parents such as adolescent mothers, parents with mental handicaps, substance-abusing parents; and more. Unlike other books on parent training, this Handbook takes a purely prescriptive approach. Each author begins by identifying a specific problem and then describes an approach to identifying, assessing, and treating the problem. In every instance, descriptions of therapeutic techniques are multimodal, integrating theory, research, implementation strategies, and extensive case material. Handbook of Parent Training, Second Edition is a valuable professional resource for child psychologists, clinical social workers, and school psychologists

Self-evaluation in depressed and conduct disordered children in residential treatment: implications for assessment and therapy (perceived competence, actual) by James M Briesmeister( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The present study investigated the different ways in which the cognitive mediator of self-evaluation is experienced and employed by diagnosed depressed and conduct disordered latency age boys in a residential treatment center. Harter's PCSC was used to compare the perceived self-evaluations of 58 subjects to their actual scores in the academic, social, and physical domains. Estimates of general self-esteem were also investigated. On the average, the depressed subjects consistently underrated, while the conduct disordered overrated, themselves. The depressed children had significantly lower estimates of general self-esteem than the conduct disordered children. However, the findings run contrary to the position of many cognitive theorists, the depressed group had more accurate self-ratings in the skill-related areas than the conduct disordered group. Both groups were most accurate in the social realm and least accurate in the academic area. Discriminant analyses indicated that perceived self-esteem, which correlated very strongly with social competence, was the best predictor of group membership. Estimates of academic competence proved to be the weakest predictors of group membership. The results suggest a reinterpretation of depressives' potential for reality testing. The implications of the findings were discussed in relation to assessment and psychotherapy
