Statistical methodologies with medical applications by Poduri S. R. S Rao( )

13 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 568 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents the methodology and applications of a range of important topics in statistics, and is designed for graduate students in Statistics and Biostatistics and for medical researchers. Illustrations and more than ninety exercises with solutions are presented. They are constructed from the research findings of the medical journals, summary reports of the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), and practical situations. The illustrations and exercises are related to topics such as immunization, obesity, hypertension, lipid levels, diet and exercise, harmful effects of smoking and air pollution, and the benefits of gluten free diet. This book can be recommended for a one or two semester graduate level course for students studying Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Health Sciences. It will also be useful as a companion for medical researchers and research oriented physicians

Sampling methodologies : with applications by Poduri S. R. S Rao( Book )

18 editions published between 2000 and 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 254 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sampling methods are integral to the design of surveys and experiments, to the validity of results, and thus to the study of statistics, social science, and a variety other disciplines that use statistical data. Yet most of the available texts on the subject are either quite advanced and theoretical or too applied, descriptive, and lacking statistical results. Sampling Methodologies with Applications offers a balanced, practical treatment of the techniques and applications of the commonly used procedures for sampling from finite populations. It keeps mathematics to a minimum, but does not avoid them entirely: it features the principle results within the text but provides their derivations in the Appendices to each chapter. In an easily followed, step-by-step presentation, the author motivates each topic with illustrations followed by examples and exercises. All of these are constructed from everyday, practical situations covering a wide variety of topics, from scholastic aptitude tests to healthcare expenditures and presidential elections. Why wade through advanced, theoretical tomes when what you need is straightforward, practical information? Why risk missing important statistical results often omitted from more basic texts? Sampling Methodologies with Applications has everything you need, presented clearly and logically for quick access to topics central to actual practice

On selecting variables in succession for best discrimination( Book )

2 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When several variates are available to classify the individual into either of two (or more) populations, the usual practice is to construct a linear discriminant function with all the variates and reject the variates with low discriminating power. Clearly this method involves extra computations and cost. A method is suggested of selecting the variates in succession for best discrimination, when the correlation between any pair of variates is the same. (Author)
On the linear and quadratic discriminators for pattern recognition by Poduri S. R. S Rao( Book )

2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this report, two problems in pattern recognition are considered: (1) when the likelihood ratio criterion results in a quadratic discriminant function, it may be possible to factor the quadratic form into two linear discriminant functions. It is shown that the probabilities of misclassifications are the same for both the linear discriminant functions and that both of them should be used for classification. (2) When the likelihood criterion results in a linear discriminant function, it is shown that the estimate of the 'squared distance' has a positive bias and hence the probability of misclassification is underestimated. On selecting variables for pattern classification( Book )

1 edition published in 1967 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The purpose of this report is two-fold. When the separating boundary between two pattern classes is a hyperplane, the effects of positive and negative correlations (between the variables used to construct the hyperplane) on the probability of misclassification are investigated. Secondly, a method for including or rejecting the variables in the hyperplane for a desired proportional gain at every stage is presented. (Author)

1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A study of call-back policies in sample surveys( Book )

1 edition published in 1966 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Factors effecting the performance of a call-back policy are the response biases at successive calls, the available budget and planned sample size, the relative costs of repeated calls, and the desired level of accuracy. By using a mathematical model due to Deming and collecting numerical data on response rates and biases from surveys in practice, this paper presents a systematic evaluation of the effects of these factors and gives advice on the number of calls that should be prescribed for a proposed survey.
