Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler( )

93 editions published between 1965 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 1,341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss( )

60 editions published between 1968 and 2011 in 5 languages and held by 1,123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The great Jessye Norman is Ariadne, the mythological heroine abandoned by her lover on the island of Naxos. In Strauss and Hofmannsthal's charming opera-within-an-opera, she is joined by Ruth Ann Swenson as Zerbinetta, the flirtatious leader of a commedia dell'arte troupe that--by order of an eccentric patron--unexpectedly finds itself in the middle of Ariadne's tragic story. Thomas Moser sings Bacchus, the young god who wins Ariadne, and Susanne Mentzer is the Composer of the fictional opera. Wagnerian bass-baritone Thomas Stewart makes a late-career cameo appearance as the Music Master

Strauss and Hofmannsthal's sumptuous and magical fairy tale receives an authoritative performance conducted by the great Karl Böhm, a protégé of the composer, in his last Met broadcast. The extraordinary cast is led by Leonie Rysanek as the Empress, the "woman without a shadow" of the title, who stars opposite James King as the ethereal Emperor, Walter Berry as the goodhearted Barak the Dyer, Ursula Schröder-Feinen as the hapless Dyer's Wife, and Mignon Dunn as the sinister Nurse

53 editions published between 1966 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 829 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beethoven's only opera attracts the greatest singers and conductors, not only for its passionate music, but also because of its profoundly stirring message of freedom and the rights of the individual against tyranny. It all comes together superbly in this historic performance led by the legendary conductor Karl Böhm. Birgit Nilsson is Leonore, the woman who disguises herself as a man in her desperate attempt to locate her husband Florestan (James King, a couple weeks after his Met debut in the same role), who has been unjustly imprisoned by his enemy, Don Pizarro (Geraint Evans)

Parsifal by Richard Wagner( Recording )

52 editions published between 1971 and 2003 in 5 languages and held by 484 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's mystical opera makes extraordinary demands on the conductor, but James Levine is renowned for the special affection and authority he brings to this transcendent work. The music shimmers and glows, evoking the legendary world of the Knights of the Holy Grail and the pure fool who brings healing power to the land. Peter Hofmann stars as the questing title hero, Jerome Hines sings the wise old man, Gurnemanz, and Mignon Dunn is the voluptuous Kundry, whose erotic temptations almost ensnare the young hero

Unable to return her childhood-friend Leukippos's affections, and unwilling to don a special dress for the Dionysian festival, Daphne soon encounters a mysterious stranger, in the guise of a herdsman, who makes an unsuccessful attempt to wheedle her into romance. He ultimately reveals himself as Apollo, the god of the sun, and enters a violent rivalry with Leukippos for Daphne's affections that ends tragically for all

In Wagner's colorful portrait of medieval Nuremberg, the wealthy Pogner (Ezio Flagello) promises his beautiful daughter Eva (Pilar Lorengar) in marriage to the winner of a song contest. But the girl has already set her sights on the handsome Walther (James King). Naturally, various obstacles have to be overcome before the happy conclusion. Benno Kusche plays Beckmesser, Eva's unsuccessful suitor, and Theo Adam is Hans Sachs, the town's cobbler and reigning poet whose deep insights into human nature make this opera so much more than a delightful comedy. Maestro Thomas Schippers leads the Met's vast orchestral and choral forces

Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber( )

11 editions published between 1991 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 274 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. Its irresistible mix of colorful folklore, the spooky supernatural, a tender romance, and the passionate struggle between good and evil are all captured in Weber's tuneful and dramatic score. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff)
