The rise of fetal and neonatal physiology : basic science to clinical care by
Lawrence D Longo(
)
26 editions published between 2013 and 2019 in English and held by 599 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This second edition offers an expanded and updated history of the field of fetal and neonatal development, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological aspects that contribute to the wellbeing or pathophysiology of newborns. In this concluding opus of a long and prominent career as a clinical scientist, Dr. Longo has invited new contributions from noted colleagues with expertise in various fields to provide a historical perspective on the impact of how modern concepts emerged in the field of fetal physiology and contributed to the current attention paid to the fetal origins of diseases in adults. In addition to new chapters on maternal physiology and complications during pregnancy, others trace the history of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, governmental funding of perinatal research, and major initiatives to support training in the new discipline of maternal fetal medicine, including the Reproductive Scientist Development prog ram. The extensive survey provided by the author, who personally knew most of the pioneers in the field, offers a unique guide for all clinical and basic scientists interested in the history of - and future approaches to diagnosing and treating - pathologies that represent the leading causes of neonatal mortality and, far too often, life-long morbidity

Wombs with a view : illustrations of the gravid uterus from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century by
Lawrence D Longo(
)
11 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The volume provides an archive of some of the most beautiful illustrations ever made of the gravid uterus with fetus and placenta, which will serve future generations of investigators, educators, and students of reproduction. The approximately two hundred figures from over one hundred volumes included are from the late fifteenth through the nineteenth century. For each author whose work is depicted in this volume, we have used the first edition or first illustrated edition. In the commentary, each volume and illustration is placed in its historical perspective, noting both the significance of that image, but also some background on the life and work of the author. For most of the works cited, there are additional references for the reader who may wish to explore these in greater depth. This volume is a unique collection not only of these historical images, but also their place in the development of scientific study

Book
)
6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Comprises eighteen essays in medical humanism, the history of medicine, and health care delivery. They are the John P. McGovern Lectures to the American Osler Society during the past two decades. Each of the essays, given by eminent physicians, historians, and educators, are timeless in their relevance to medicine and health care delivery. In many respects they are "lay sermons" on the philosophy and ethics of health care, ministering to the sick, and professionalism. The contributors, from differing backgrounds and with different points of view, discuss social and cultural factors that have influenced the history of medicine and medical humanism
