Counselor Ayres' memorial by Machado de Assis( Book )

The love story that the Counselor narrates revolves around Fedilia and Tristao, who both are the godchildren of childless couple Aguiar and Dona Carmo. It is thought that the marriage between Aquiar and Dona Carmo is modeled after the relationship between de Assis and his wife, Caroline. The Counselorʹs diary entries chronicles Fideliaʹs transition from a widow bent on a lifelong habit of mourning her dead husband to a woman who rediscovers the world of the living and of love. Written in the late 1880s, the counselorʹs diary documents some of the social changes taking place in Brazil. There are several mentions of slavery and its abolition on May 13, 1888. The counselor does not himself engage much with the issue saying that old ways of thinking prevail even as he recognizes that he should assume more responsibility and interest in the matter. This stance apparently reflects the authorʹs own public disengagement with the issue of slavery and its abolition. de Assis, whose father was a mulatto, has been heavily criticized for not politicizing his works and addressing the plight of black Brazilians in his works. I disagree with this sentiment. -- Description from http://kinnareads.wordpress.com (Oct. 24, 2011)

Bento Santiago is madly in love with his neighbour, Capitú. He even breaks a promise his devout mother made to God #x96; that he become a priest #x96; in order to marry her. But, once wed, Bento becomes increasingly convinced that Capitú is having a torrid affair, that his son is not his own, and that his best friend has cuckolded him. What follows is a rich and sardonic narrative, as Bento attempts to discern his son's paternity. Are his suspicions actually based in reality or have his obsessive ruminations given way to deceptive illusions? Originally published in Brazil in 1900, Dom Casmurro is widely considered Machado de Assis's greatest work and a classic of Brazilian realist literature. It is a delightful and hilarious novel #x96; told by an entertainingly unreliable narrator #x96; about the powers of jealousy and the deceitful persuasiveness of a mind in the grip of paranoia. #x91;If Borges is the writer who made García Marquez possible then it is no exaggeration to say that Machado De Assis is the writer who made Borges possible.' #x96; Salman Rushdie #x91;The greatest writer ever produced in Latin America.' #x96; Susan Sontag #x91;Machado de Assis is a great ironist, a tragic comedian. In his books, in their most comic moments, he underlines the suffering by making us laugh.' #x96; Philip Roth #x91;Machado de Assis was a literary force, transcending nationality and language, comparable certainly to Flaubert, Hardy or James.' #x96; New York Times Book Review
