The Jews of the Soviet Union : the history of a national minority by Benjamin Pinkus( Book )

19 editions published between 1988 and 1990 in English and held by 772 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a comprehensive and topical history of the Jews in the Soviet Union and is based on firsthand documentary evidence and the application of a pioneering research method into the fate of national minorities. Within a four-part chronological framework, Professor Pinkus examines not only the legal-political status of the Jews, and their reciprocal relationship with the Soviet majority, but also the impact of internal economic, demographic and social processes upon the religious, educational and cultural life of Soviet Jewry. A second layer of analysis describes in depth the complex linkages between the Jews of the Soviet Union, the Jews in other diasporas and the state of Israel itself. The Jews of the Soviet Union marks a major contribution to the historiography and social analysis of its subject and provides a worthy companion to Professor Pinkus's acclaimed documentary study The Soviet Union and the Jews 1948-1967

3 editions published in 2007 in Hebrew and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The introduction on pp. 30-69 discusses, inter alia, prewar communist anti-Zionism. Chs. 5-6 (p. 275-455) discuss Soviet anti-Zionism from 1949-53, which gradually took on a more antisemitic character and actually endangered Jewish minorities there and in other communist countries. While the USSR had supported the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, there was a change in the attitudes of Stalin and Soviet authorities toward Israel and the Jews in 1949-50, which led to the anti-Israel and antisemitic campaign of 1951-53. This change culminated in the Doctors' Plot and the cutting off of relations with Israel; however, the situation began to improve shortly after Stalin's sudden death in March 1953
