"Granddaughter of William the Conqueror and of King Malcolm of the Scots, and daughter of Henry I, Matilda fought for the throne of England, arguably hers by right, for nine years, and was denied it largely because she was a woman. In valour and determination Matilda may be compared with Boudicca or with Elizabeth I." "This is the first fully documented account of her extraordinary, action-packed life to have been published in English. Book jacket."--Jacket

The Gesta Guillelmi of William of Poitiers by Gulielmus( Book )

9 editions published in 1998 in English and Latin and held by 328 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

William of Poitiers began his career as a knight before studying in the schools of Poitiers and entering the Church. He became a chaplain in the household of William the Conqueror, and was able to give a first-hand account of the events of 1066-7. The Gesta Guillelmi, his unfinished biography of the king, is particularly important for its detailed description of William's campaigns in Normandy, the careful preparations he made for the invasion of England, the battle of Hastings and the establishment of Norman power after the Conquest. It is a mine of information of military tactics and the conduct of war in the eleventh century. Though written from the point of view of the Norman court, it gives what is probably the most authentic account of these momentous events. This edition, by the late R.H.C. Davis and Marjorie Chibnall, with facing-page English translation of the Latin text, provides the first complete English translation, as well as a full historical introduction and detailed notes. - Publisher

The Waltham chronicle : an account of the discovery of our holy cross at Montacute and its conveyance to Waltham( Book )

5 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in English and Latin and held by 300 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Waltham Chronicle is an interesting example of a twelfth-century historia fundacionis. Written by one of the secular canons of Waltham just after the refoundation of the house as an Augustinian priory (later abbey) in 1177, it records the legends of the original foundation and miracle stories, together with historical information about the pre-Conquest benefactors, the internal organization of the community, the burial of Harold after the Battle of Hastings, and events during Stephen's reign

The Normans by Marjorie Chibnall( Book )

The Normans' remarkable warfare and maritime successes are revealed in detail including their conquest of England, infiltration of Wales and Scotland, and assimilation in Ireland; and their campaigns in the South of Europe including southern Italy and the Mediterranean region. The book also examines the development of Norman culture, the writing of their own history, Norman myth, and their achievements in bringing together various racial and cultural elements to form a single people."--Jacket
Piety, power, and history in medieval England and Normandy by Marjorie Chibnall( Book )

10 editions published between 2000 and 2017 in English and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This title was first published in 2000: The studies here are broadly concerned with ecclesiastical history as envisaged in the work of Orderic Vitalis: the history of society and culture, comprising the life and activities of lay men and women in war and peace no less than those of monks and clerks, with a special emphasis on monasteries in the Anglo-Norman world. Some enlarge directly on Orderic's work; others deal with aspects of the life of the Empress Matilda, and with St Anselm and Bec-Hellouin. The underlying themes, in addition to history as written by both monks and secular clerks and its sources in chronicles and charters, are piety (including the mixed motives of monastic patrons) and power in both church and state and the conflicts these engendered. It has been said that the history of medieval power is to be sought in its microcosms; these studies look closely at some of the microcosms."--Provided by publisher
