Van Eyck : and the founders of early Netherlandish painting by Otto Pächt( Book )

21 editions published between 1994 and 1999 in English and held by 472 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this volume, the great medieval scholar Otto Pacht is concerned with one of the key problems in the history of western art: the comet-like appearance of a new kind of painting in Northern Europe at the end of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century. The leading artists of this phenomenon were the Master of Flemalle and the Brothers Van Eyck, and the most outstanding work produced was the famous Ghent Altarpiece; it has puzzled scholars to this day. It is a topic that occupied Pacht throughout his long career, and the present book is based on a series of lectures given at the University of Vienna in the 1960s and early 70s." "In this first English translation of the acclaimed German edition, Pacht examines the work of Jan and Hubert Van Eyck and their contemporaries in the context of a changing intellectual world - the transition from medieval thought to a perception that recognizes and embraces all facets of visible reality." "The illustrations, in colour and monochrome, cover not only the major work of the Brothers Van Eyck and the Master of Flemalle, but also many comparative works. A special attraction is the folding plate, in colour, of the entire Ghent Altarpiece."--Jacket

The Master of Mary of Burgundy by Otto Pächt( Book )

20 editions published between 1947 and 1968 in English and held by 404 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The anonymous painter known as the Master of Mary of Burgundy was one of the most talented and inventive of South Netherlandish illuminators.1 The Northern Renaissance got a strong impression of this unique talent with the Master?s illuminated manuscript,?The Prayer Book of Charles the Bold,? in 1469. The Master worked for his prominent patrons at the court of Burgundy for Charles, the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife, Margaret of York. The Master's name derives from his most notable work, a book of hours made around 1480 for Mary of Burgundy, the daughter of Charles and Margaret.?The Book of Hours of Mary of Burgundy? is the only other work the Master is associated with. The Master is known for depicting the movement of muscles and the expressiveness on the faces of his subject, however his greatest contribution to the illuminated manuscript was the handling of the borders on the manuscript page. This new technique, using trompe l?oeil was perfected in the?Ghent-Bruges school? of painters.--By Karla Flattery--http://masterofmaryofburgundy.weebly.com/the-master.html
Venetian painting in the 15th century : Jacopo, Gentile and Giovanni Bellini and Andrea Mantegna by Otto Pächt( Book )

10 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 367 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Otto Pacht, one of the most significant art-historians of the 'Vienna School', and well known for his analyses of Early Netherlandish art, turns his attention in this publication to the humanist circle of Early Renaissance painters in Venice, dominated by Jacopo Bellini, his sons Gentile and Giovanni, and also his son-in-law Andrea Mantegna. It was a period of a newly awakened interest in the Antique, of studies made directly from nature, and of trial and error in the technique of perspective. And in addition, a new awareness of the role of light and colour in the devotional and often monumental images of the Madonna, of altarpieces and of allegories contributed to the founding of what we now recognise as the hall-mark of Venetian painting, that culminated with Titian." "Of the Bellini family, it has been Giovanni who was generally regarded as the major figure of the dynasty. Pacht, however, devotes particular attention to Jacopo's work, interpreting it as the basis for his son's later development. He analyses Jacopo's London and Paris Sketchbook drawings, demonstrating where Late Gothic elements can be seen to be overtaken by the need to give perspective depth to the image, and how subsequent painting took account of these changes. This is also the essence of Pacht's examination of Mantegna's work, where the construction of space and depth is the key to our understanding of Mantegna's creative process." "Turning to the next generation of the Bellini family, Pacht guides our eyes to appreciate the refinement and perception of Gentile's portraits, and finally takes us step by step through the works of Giovanni, where fantasy combines with the play of colour and light in creating compositions, devotional images, and landscape settings of perfect harmony and beauty."--Jacket

Jung. In one of the earliest and perhaps the most brilliant of all art historical "surveys," Riegl addresses the different visual arts within a sweeping conception of the history of culture. His account derives from Hegelian models but decisively opens onto alternative pathways that continue to complicate attempts to reduce art merely to the artist's intentions or its social and historical functions."--Jacket
