Essayez, si vous le pouvez, d’arrêter un homme qui voyage avec son suicide à la boutonnière”. Dans son “Anthologie de l’humour noir” André Breton le décrit en ces termes : “Jacques Rigaut, vers vingt ans, s’est condamné lui-même à mort et a attendu impatiemment, d’heure en heure, pendant dix ans, l’instant de parfaite convenance où il pourrait mettre fin à ses jours”. Et Paul Éluard : “L’arme braquée par le suicide contre la vie en a toujours raison. Nuls débris, nulles ruines ne peuvent subsister après le passage de cette volonté qui brûle de tout détruire. Mais un tel attentat laisse entière la force de celui qui l’a commis. Le regret d’être né, le besoin de mourir disparaissent avec le monde qu’ils tuent. Seule, absolument seule et pure, la pensée satisfaite se considère et se reconnaît. Jacques Rigaut a vécu avec le souci de cette ressemblance parfaite. Lord Patchogue en fait foi”.
