The Porteous Riots were caused by the hanging of a smuggler in Edinburgh in 1736; Captain Porteous ordered the military to fire on the rioters and killed many; he was sentenced to death, but respited; the mob, however, seized him afterwards and hanged him. The incident had Jacobite overtones and was used by Sir Walter Scott in his novel The Heart of Midlothian
