In the last decade, the nuclear shell-model has considerably increased in importance. The inclusion of a strong spin-orbit coupling made it possible to predict a large group of nuclear phenomena: various improvements of lesser importance have led to results more in agreement with experiment for a number of other properties; and a firmer theoretical understanding of the basis of the shell model has been obtained. The development of mathematical methods for the evaluation of matrix elements and the calculation of wave functiuons in the shell model is thus of considerable interest. With presently available methods, the computational labour involved quickly becomes prohibitive if the number of nucleons outside the last closed shell is large, or if any but a few simple types of force between particle pairs are assumed. The present publication is intended to reduce the labour involved in obtaining numerical results; it is hoped that the tables of transformation brackets and other tables will enable at least the simpler types of calculations to be made without consuming too much time
