Stopouts or stayouts? : undergraduates who leave college in their first year by Laura Horn( Book )

2 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report examines the beginning of the educational experiences of students who leave college before their second year, both those who return to college later (stopouts) and those who do not return (stayouts). The report is based on data from the 1989-90 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study. First-year students in 1989-90 were followed up in 1992 and 1994. Among study highlights are the following: overall, nearly 30 percent of first-year students left before their second year; 64 percent of students who left the 4-year sector returned within five years (stopped out), whereas half of students who left the public 2-year sector stopped out and half stayed out; among stopouts in the 4-year sector 42 percent returned to the same institution, whereas in the public 2-year sector, 57 percent returned to the same institution; and in both sectors, students who stayed out were more likely to be older, to have children, and to work full time. Twenty-four tables and figures present data in sections on: overview of first-year leavers, stopout path from 4-year institutions, stopout path from public 2-year institutions, and characteristics of stopouts and stayouts. Appended are a glossary and technical notes. (Contains 18 references.) (DB)
Beginning postsecondary students longitudinal study first follow-up 1996-98 (BPS:96/98) : methodology report by Jennifer S Wine( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes the methods and procedures used for the full-scale data collection effort of the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study First Follow-Up 1996-98 (BPS:96/98). These students, who started their postsecondary education during the 1995-96 academic year, were first interviewed during 1996 as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, 1996. This study is the first follow-up of this cohort. Data collected includes postsecondary enrollment, employment, and demographics; a field locating/interviewing component allows comparative analyses with the first (1990) BPS cohort. Chapter 1 provides an introduction, some background, and the purpose of the study; chapter 2 covers the design and methodology of the full-scale study; chapter 3 covers data collection outcomes; chapter 4 covers evaluation of data quality; chapter 5 covers data file construction; and chapter 6 covers weighting and variance estimation. Appendixes include a list of technical review panel members; final data elements; facsimile questionnaire; table of contents of interviewer training manual; and sample mailout materials. Using the 1996-98 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, this report describes short-term enrollment in postsecondary education: departure within three years of students' first entry into postsecondary education without earning a credential and without returning. The analyses include exploration of factors associated with departure and the reasons students themselves gave for departure among students who began at public 4-year, private not-for-profit 4-year, and public 2-year institutions
A study of higher education instructional expenditures : the Delaware study of instructional costs and productivity by Michael F Middaugh( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 264 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This third report in a congressionally mandated study focuses solely on the issue of direct instructional expenditures and the factors associated with the comparative magnitude of these expenditures are 4-year colleges and universities in the United States. The data source is multiple cycles of the Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity (Delaware Study). Begun in 1992 at the University of Delaware, the study has grown into a national data-sharing consortium that embraces more than 300 4-year colleges and universities. Data from 1998, 2000, and 2001 were collected using an established survey instrument. The key finding from the analysis of multiple years of data is that most of the variance in instructional cost across institutions, as measured by direct expense per student per student credit hour taught, is associated with the disciplinary mix within an institution. A secondary factor affecting cost is institutional mission as related to Carnegie institutional classification, but this accounts for less of the cost differential between institutions than the disciplinary mix factor. Findings underscore that the disciplines that compose a college or university's curriculum, not the Carnegie designation, are associated with most of the dispersion of costs among institutions. It is evident from this study that the factors that are associated with instructional costs are very different from the factors associated with tuition prices. Five appendixes describe the Delaware study and its instruments and present supplemental data tables. (Contains 23 tables, 3 figures, and 15 references.) (Sld)
