The second episode of "Brits who Built the Modern World" focuses on the 1980s, when modern architecture was deeply unpopular and under attack from the Prince of Wales. The architects reveal the dramatic stories behind some of their most famous creations, including Rogers's Lloyd's of London building and Foster's Stansted Airport. Terry Farrell reveals how he was kept in the dark when he was designing the MI6 Headquarters; Michael Hopkins recalls the challenges of bringing ultra-modern architecture into the traditional world of Lord's Cricket Ground; and Nicholas Grimshaw follows in the footsteps of the great Victorian engineers with his Waterloo International station

The final episode of "Brits who Built the Modern World" focuses on the late 1990s to the present day, when Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Michael Hopkins and Terry Farrell were at the peak of their success - building iconic landmarks across Britain and the world - but also facing some of the biggest controversies of their careers. Rogers reveals what went wrong with the Millennium Dome; Foster recalls the wobbles of London's Millennium Bridge; and Michael Hopkins explains how his new parliamentary building, Portcullis House, became the most expensive office block in Britain. 2 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Michael Hopkins and Terry Farrell were born within six years of each other in the 1930s. Shaped by the optimism of the post-war years and the sixties counterculture, these pillars of today's establishment began their careers as outsiders and radicals. The first episode in this series includes glimpses of some of their recent work, such as London's new 'Cheese grater' skyscraper, Spaceport America and the KK100 skyscraper in China before looking in detail at revolutionary projects from the 1960s and 70s. Rogers and his collaborators tell the story of the Pompidou Center in Paris. Other early projects featured include Norman Foster's glassy Willis Faber & Dumas Headquarters in Ipswich, Farrell & Grimshaw's corrugated aluminum tower block next to Regent's Park in London and the industrial-style Hopkins House in Hampstead

Renault Centre : Swindon, 1982 by Chris Abel( Book )

10 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A documentation of the Renault Centre (winner of four awards), describing how it was designed and engineered, using documentation from the Foster Associates' archives. The author argues that it is the first of a new breed of buildings in which computer-controlled technology is exploited to an unprecedented degree in the construction of a low-cost building. The building, designed by architect Sir Norman Foster is seen as a technical milestone in 20th century architecture and the augmentation of the text with a set of detailed technical drawings and fact-sheets enables the reader to see clearly how the building was fitted together. The book is intended for the use of architects, engineers and students. The book is part of the "Architecture in Detail" series. The books do not carry a contents list. The common layout of the books in the series is: essay, photographs, specially commissioned drawings, reference details (bibliography and chronology). Each of these monographs is designed to be a complete and accurate archival record and intended to be the standard reference on that building for students and scholars as well as practising architects

Harry Seidler : lifework by Vladimir Belogolovskiĭ( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A comprehensive survey of the work of a master of mid- to late-twentieth-century modernist design. Over the course of a career spanning more than five decades, Australian architect Harry Seidler embarked upon a long series of dramatically innovative and sculptural houses with a rare sensitivity to site, space, and structure. And while these soaring, inspiring houses have been the source of Seidler's fame within architectural circles, this book gives a complete view of this modern master's body of work for the first time. Seidler is now widely acknowledged as a leading member of the postwar generation of modernists and one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century in the southern hemisphere. With commissions not only in Australia but also in Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Mexico, and Hong ..." --Publisher description

The Great Court at the British Museum : Foster + Partners by Norman Foster( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From initial sketches to final project, this book documents the "reinvention" of the British Museum's Great Court. One of the world's greatest institutions of learning and art, the British Museum sees nearly six million visitors annually. Yet until Norman Foster's remarkable transformation of its courtyard, the enormous rambling structure was like a city without a park. Numerous photographs reveal the court from a variety of perspectives and show the cutting-edge technology of the spectacular glazed canopy that shelters what is now the largest covered public space in Europe. Involving the magnificent restoration of the Reading Room, the creation of new galleries for African art and a range of educational resources, the Great Court project was a herald of the British Museum's wider transformation. The project and this book illuminate Foster + Partners' holistic and ingenious approach to contemporary design
Carré d'art, Nîmes : Foster + Partners by Norman Foster( Book )

9 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and French and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines the Carre d'Art project, a modern library of art and technology inspired by an ancient Roman temple in the French city of Nimes. Located across the street from one of Nimes' most distinctive Roman antiquities, the Roman Maison Carre, sits the Carre d'Art, a media library which also houses an impressive art gallery. Designed by the renowned architect Norman Foster, the Carre d'Art draws from the antiquity of its namesake while ingeniously interacting with the contemporary demands of an urban environment. The result is an urban space, lined with cafes and thronged with people, that has breathed new life into Nimes' social and cultural atmosphere. Filled with photographs, sketches, plans, and commentary on the building's conception and design, this book illustrates how a building project, backed by an enlightened urban planning initiative, can provide a catalyst for reinvigorating the fabric of a city. --Book Description from Website
