The new urban sociology by Mark Gottdiener( )

55 editions published between 1994 and 2019 in 3 languages and held by 1,252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Representing a major contribution to the field, authors Mark Gottdiener and Ray Hutchinson present their breakthrough text in a new third edition, now completely revised and streamlined to provide students with a solid grounding on the topic. The book is organized around an integrated paradigm - the sociospatial perspective - which considers the role played by social factors such as race, class, gender, lifestyle, economics, culture, and politics on the development of metropolitan areas. New case studies throughout the text represent the most recent work in the field, as well as key terms and discussion questions at the end of each chapter. Additional updates include discussions of globalism, suburbanization, the multicentered region as the new urban form, the new urbanism, and critical perspectives on planning and policy. Cast in a clear, accessible delivery that students will comprehend, The New Urban Sociology, Third Edition is a necessity for all courses on the subject."--Jacket

The theming of America : dreams, visions, and commercial spaces by Mark Gottdiener( Book )

12 editions published between 1997 and 2019 in English and held by 513 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mark Gottdiener explores the nature of social change as it has developed since the 1960s as reflected in the "theming" of America, from Graceland to Dollywood, from Las Vegas to Disney World, from the Mall of America to your local mall. Nowhere can modern Americans escape the profusion of recognizable symbols and signs attached to virtually every aspect of their culture constantly reminding them that they are on familiar and comforting grounds. "Just come in, friend, and buy; make yourself at home," these symbols seem to say, thus tying media culture and the seduction of consumerism to the production of ingeniously designed symbolic spaces. This is the first book to explore the origins, nature, and future of themed spaces in our information-overloaded world. Gottdiener begins with a brief historical account of the shifting importance of themes in the construction of built space. He then evaluates the economic basis for the increasing reliance on symbols in the marketing of commercial enterprises and analyzes contemporary trends in themed restaurants, malls, airports, theme parks, museums, and war memorials. Final chapters are devoted to examining such critical issues as the disappearance of public space, the relation between themes and mass media industries, and the future of symbolic spaces

Las Vegas : the social production of an all-American city by Mark Gottdiener( Book )

10 editions published between 1999 and 2007 in English and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Using the perspective of the new urban sociology, this book is a historical account of how Las Vegas became a metropolitan area. Attention is paid to the role of the federal government in subsidizing growth, as it has done for the entire sunbelt, at the expense of the rest of the country: to the key actions of a select group of real estate developers who brought mass suburban housing to the desert; and to local public officials - some of whom worked to improve the region, and others who betrayed the people's trust for personal gain." "Las Vegas: The Social Production of an All-American City also addresses growing problems in the area, including an environmental crisis, increasing public debt, overcrowding in schools, gridlock traffic, the proliferation of special interests, and the poor performance of weak government."--Jacket

The theming of America : dreams, media fantasies, and themed environments by Mark Gottdiener( Book )

13 editions published between 2001 and 2019 in English and held by 375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The second edition of The Theming of America explores the nature of social change in America since the 1960s - from Graceland to Dollywood, from Las Vegas to Disneyworld, from the Mall of America to your local mall. Mark Gottdiener's book explores the origins, nature and future of themed environments in our information-overloaded world. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to include material on resistance to themed environments, such as worldwide protests against franchising and Disneyfication. Modern Americans cannot escape the profusion of recognizable symbols and signs attached to virtually all aspects of our culture, tying our media culture and the seductions of consumerism to the production of ingeniously designed spaces."--BOOK JACKET

"Widely recognized as a groundbreaking text, The New Urban Sociology is a broad and expert introduction to urban sociology that is both relevant and accessible to the student. A thought leader in the field, the book is organized around an integrated paradigm-the sociospatial perspective-which considers the role played by social factors such as race, class, gender, lifestyle, economics, culture, and politics on the development of metropolitan areas. Emphasizing the importance of space to social life and real estate to urban development, the book integrates social, ecological and political economy perspectives and research through a fresh theoretical approach. With its unique perspective, concise history of urban life, clear summary of urban social theory, and attention to the impact of culture on urban development, this book gives students a cohesive conceptual framework for understanding cities and urban life. In this thoroughly revised 5th edition, authors Mark Gottdiener, Ray Hutchison, and Michael T. Ryan offer expanded discussions of created cultures, gentrification, and urban tourism, and have incorporated the most recent work in the field throughout the text.
