Sudjic charts our relationship--both innocent and knowing--with all things designed. From the opulent excesses of the catwalk to the playfulness of an Alessi jam jar, he shows how we can be manipulated and seduced by our possessions. With scintillating wit he addresses these questions and more, exploring the reasons why every designer yearns to put a personal stamp on a chair or an adjustable lamp, and where design ends and art begins
The endless city : the urban age project by the London School of Economics and Deutsche Bank's Alfred Herrhausen Society by Richard Burdett( Book )

16 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 627 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At the turn of the twenty-first century, the world is faced with an unprecedented challenge. It must address a fundamental shift in the world's population towards the cities, and away from mankind's rural roots. Over the course of two years, a group of internationally renowned professionals from a variety of different disciplines and backgrounds gathered together in six world cities to take stock of the new urban condition and to offer an approach to dealing with it. The result was a sometimes passionate, always challenging and informed debate on how architects, urbanists, politicians and policy makers can constructively plan the infrastructure and development of the endless city, to promote a better social and economic life for its citizens."--Jacket

The 100 mile city by Deyan Sudjic( Book )

26 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and German and held by 515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The thesis of this book is that a whole range of fundamental urban changes whose causes had been building up for some time took effect in the course of the 1980s and resulted in the recasting of the shape and character of the city. Some of these changes concerned the way people lived, some had an influence on the physical form of the city, and others were connected with the relationship of one city to another. This book deals with five cities in particular: London, Paris, Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles, though it touches on many others, and it seeks to make sense of the forces that are shaping all western cities. The five are the largest, the furthest evolved, and the most important of the industrial cities, a species that went through its most violent period of growth in the nineteenth century but which then, in many cases, atrophied. In these five however, while there has been some decay, their metamorphosis into a system of interlinked, but also antagonistic cities has been the real legacy of the 1980s. Together they dominated the world's economy and cultural life, but they also had to struggle to maintain their position, against each other and potential competitors."--Introduction, page 1
