The Enlightenment reason, tolerance, and humanity by James Schmidt ( )
4 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 761 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This course discusses the work of such influential thinkers as Voltaire, Locke, Diderot, Smith, Kant, and Franklin. It also spends some time with less well-known, but no less influential, figures. To understand this era one needs to look not just at what people wrote but also at how they lived. People began to congregate in coffeehouses, where they read newspapers, discussed politics, and created something known as "public opinion". Others began to meet in societies that were dedicated to the advancement of the sciences and there they explored how science might be put to work improving society. This course offers a balanced assessment of the Enlightenment, considering both its achievements and its shortcomings and focusing not only on its most important intellectual achievements but also on the strange and often colorful characters who populated it

Victory rests with the Lord : God in the Vietnam War by James Schmidt ( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Victory Rests with the Lord is a validation of Proverbs 21:31, "The Horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord." The commander of one of the most successful infantry companies during the Vietnam War makes a strong case that the war was winnable if God would have provided our leaders the wisdom and creativity to employ the correct tactics. Victory Rests with the Lord explains why the most powerful military in the world was defeated in the Vietnam War. It explains why and how God intervened in both victory and defeat within the war. Uncover both the flawed tactics that led to America's defeat, and the tactics that would have led to victory if used throughout the war. Victory Rests with the Lord reveals a highly effective automated battlefield that employed mechanical ambushes in the latter years of the war. Learn the most important lesson from the Vietnam War and what America must do to prevent another similar defeat. Victory Rests with the Lord provides evidence of the power of Jesus Christ and serves as a warning to America to return to the Bible as its moral compass
