John Cranston was in Rhode Island by 1644, when he was appointed drummer for the town of Portsmouth, at about age nineteen. He married Mary Clarke, daughter of Jeremiah and Frances Latham Clarke, ca. 1658. He was serving as governor of the colony of Rhode Island, when he died in 1680. His descendant in the fifth generation, Mary Cranston (1791-1892), married William Van Deursen (1783-1833), son of William and Marth Whittelsey Van Deursen, at at Middleton, Connecticut, in 1830. They had two children, 1821- 1834
