Effect of planting time on seed infection by Phomopsis sojae in ten soybean cultivars by Onkar D Dhingra ( )

Cultivares de soja dos grupos de maturacao VI ('Parana' e 'Perola'), VII ('Bragg' e 'Bossier'), VIII ('Vicoja', 'Santa Rosa', 'Sao Luiz', IAC-2 e 'UFV-2') e do IX ('UFV-1') foram plantadas em blocos casualizados na fazenda experimental da Universidade Federal de Vicosa, Minas Gerais. O plantio foi efetuado na epoca normal e um mes mais tarde, e a colheita realizada na epoca de maturacao normal. O plantio tardio reduziu o periodo para a maturacao de 8 a 23 dias, dependendo do cultivar. Phomopsis sojae foi o principal fungo isolado em todos os cultivares, em ambas as epocas de plantio. Um a 5% das sementes de todos os cultivares foram infectadas com P. sojae no plantio tardio, exceto 'IAC-2', 'UFV-2' e 'UFV-1', enquanto 14 a 48% das sementes foram infetadas, considerando-se o plantio regular. Houve diferencas significativas entre cultivares, quando se compararam as porcentagens de sementes infetadas com P. sojae, quando o plantio foi realizado na epoca normal. A maioria dos cultivares plantados tardiamente escapou de chuvas durante a maturacao, o que nao ocorreu com os cultivares 'Bragg', 'Parana' e 'Perola', que tiveram significativamente menor porcentagem de sementes infectadas com P. sojae, que quando plantadas na epoca normal. A percentagem de emergencia nao foi afetada pela infeccao de P. sojae nas sementes, mas houve correlacao significativa (r = 0,94) entre a porcentagem de sementes infectadas por P. sojae e a porcentagem de plantulas com lesoes necroticas. O plantio tardio de cultivares de soja de maturacao precose e recomendado para a regiao de Vicosa, na producao de sementes sadias
Infusion of fungicides into soybean seeds with intact seed coats by organic solvents by Onkar D Dhingra ( )

Benomyl, thiophanate-methyl, PCNB and chlorothalonil penetrated the seed coats of intact soybean seeds soaked in fungicide solvent mixtures of dichloromethane, trichloromethane and carbontetrachloride, respectively, when soaked for periods of 30 minutes to 24 hours. Acetone aided the penetration of benomyl and thiophanate-methyl only into the seedeoat with no increase in fungicide concentration with increased immersion time. No fungicide penetrated, using any of the solvents, into the cotyledons of seeds with intact seedcoats. Conversely, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl penetrated the cotyledons of seeds with broken seedcoats immersed in fungicide-solvent mixtures and the concentration of each fungicide increased with increased immersion time. None of the solvents showed toxic effects on the seeds immersed for up to 24 hours. Fungicides applied to diseased seeds in organic solvents or as dusts significantly increased seedling emergence over the nontreated control when the fungicide was not removed from the seed surface. Emergence was similar to the nontreated control when the fungicide was removed from seeds dusted with any of the fungicides and from those treated with chlorothalonil or PCNB in acetone. The emergence of seeds treated with each of the fungicides in the solvents or with benomyl of thiophanate-methyl in acetone was higher than nontreated seeds, when fungicides were washed from the seed surface
Effect of soil moisture and carbon nitrogen ratio on survival of Macrophomina phaseolina in soybean stems in soil by Onkar D Dhingra ( )

The number of recoveries of Macrophomina phaseolina (M.phaseoli, Rhizoctonia bataticola) from infected soybean stem pieces, which were mixedin either of two soil types, decreased with increasing soil moisture from 20 to 100% moisture-holding capacities (MHC). The fungus was not recovered from stem pieces at 100% MHC for 4 weeks in either soil type.The number of recoveries from stem pieces in soils with high carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratio amendments (40 and 80) were less than those of lowC:N ratio amendments (10 and 20). Reduction in the number of viable sclerotia may be brought about in the field by keeping soil moisture above 60% of its MHC at 30oC or above for 3 to 4 weeks
