Christianity : two thousand years by Ha li si( Book )

12 editions published between 2001 and 2006 in English and Chinese and held by 465 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The authors chose their highlights with care. The selection provides a framework of development giving new insights into what it means to be a twenty-first century Christian. Readers can enjoy any of these essays in its own right; individually each chapter shows the changes of development in the history of ideas: the very changes of atmosphere. This book gains its full effect, therefore, by being read in the round. As a finale, the Bishop of Oxford, Richard Harries, concludes with a thought for the future: How should Christianity proceed into the new millennium?"--Jacket

After the evil : Christianity and Judaism in the shadow of the Holocaust by Richard Harries( Book )

11 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The evil of the holocaust demands a radical rethink of the traditional Christian understanding of Judaism. This does not mean jettisoning Christianity's deepest convictions in order to make it conform to Judaism. Rather, Richard Harries develops the work of recent Jewish scholarship to discern resonances between central Christian and Jewish beliefs. This thought-provoking book offers fresh approaches to contentious and sensitive issues. A key chapter on the nature of forgiveness is sympathetic to the Jewish charge that Christians talk much too easily about forgiveness. Another chapter on suffering in Judaism and Christianity rejects the usual stereotypes and argues for important common ground, for example in the idea that God suffers in the suffering of his people. There are also chapters on the state of Israel and the place of Jerusalem in Christian and Jewish thought. Richard Harries argues that the basic covenant is not with either Judaism or Christianity but with humanity. These, like other religions, are different, distinctive voices in response to God's primal affirmation of human life, which for Christians is achieved and given in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the light of this the author maintains--controversially --that Christians should not be trying to convert Jews to Christianity. Rather Jews and Christians should stand together and build on the great amount they have in common to work together for a better world. -- PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION
Art and the beauty of God : a Christian understanding by Richard Harries( Book )

20 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in English and Spanish and held by 325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In recent centuries, with the notable exception of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Christian theology has failed to find a proper place for beauty. Richard Harries shows how a biblical faith can give a key place to it, and he argues for a distinctively Christian approach to art which is also sensitive to the spiritual dimension in all art."--Jacket
The image of Christ in modern art by Richard Harries( Book )

16 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Image of Christ in Modern Art explores the challenges, presented by the radical and rapid changes of artistic style in the 20th century, to artists who wished to relate to traditional Christian imagery. In this highly illustrated book, Richard Harries looks at artists associated with the birth of modernism, such as Epstein and Rouault, as well as those with a highly distinctive understanding of religion such as Chagall and Stanley Spencer. Through a beautiful range of images and insightful text, Harries suggests that the modern movement in art has turned out to be a friend not a foe of Chr

Reinhold Niebuhr and contemporary politics : God and power( Book )

16 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When Barack Obama praised the writings of philosopher theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in the run up to the 2008 US Presidential Elections, he joined a long line of top politicians who closely engaged with Niebuhr's ideas, including Tony Benn, Jimmy Carter, Martin Luther King Jr. and Dennis Healey. Beginning with his early ministry amongst industrial workers in early twentieth century Detroit, Niebuhr displayed a passionate commitment to social justice that infused his life's work. Rigorously championing 'Christian Realism' he sought a practically orientated intellectual engagement with the political challenges of his day. His ideas on International Relations have also helped to shape debate amongst leading academic thinkers and policy makers. In both Christian and secular contexts he continues to attract new readers today. In this timely re-evaluation both critics and disciples of Niebuhr's work reflect on his notable contribution to Christian social ethics, the Christian doctrine of humanity, and the engagement of Christian thought with contemporary politics. The authors bring a wide range of expertise from both sides of the Atlantic, indicating how a re-evaluation of Niebuhr's thought can help inform contemporary debates on Christian social ethics and other wider theological issues

Public life and the place of the church : reflections to honour the Bishop of Oxford by Michael W Brierley( Book )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The work of Richard Harries, Bishop of Oxford from 1987 to 2006, has been highly distinctive for the consistency of its engagement with contemporary society. It represents a model of the Church which is outward-looking, a Church which is as ready to learn from others as it is to offer its own wisdom and resources. This book reflects on Richard Harries' ministry in the 'borderlands' of society and Church, and engages deeply with the nature of modern society and the place of the Church within it. Taking Richard Harries' contributions as their inspiration, key figures, each of them major commentators on areas of pressing contemporary concern, probe the important questions which people are asking about a range of social issues. Arms and violence, the role of the media in public life, spirituality, multifaith Britain, sex, capitalism, the second chamber, and medical ethics are all discussed, building up a serious debate on the kind of society in which we live and making suggestive comments about the part which the Church might play. Contributors: Sabina Alkire, Michael Bourke, Melvyn Bragg, John Drury, Claire Foster, Jonathan Gorsky, Anthony Howard, Douglas Hurd, Eric James, Julia Neuberger, Edmund Newell, Christopher Rowland, Jane Shaw, Margaret Shepherd, Roger Wagner, Keith Ward, Rowan Williams, Shirley Williams and James Woodward."--Provided by publisher
