Basile le Grand et son univers d'amis d'après sa correspondance : une stratégie de communion by Robert Pouchet( Book )

1 edition published in 1990 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph about Greek patristics is based on the 366 letters of St. Basil (who lived from 329 to 379 and became bishop of Caesarea, in Cappadocia), read in the original Greek text published by y. Courtonne, in ed. Bude, CUF, Paris 1957-1966. But this research resorts to St. Basil's complete works and to those of his contemporaries, either they were Christians or not, especially of Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa. Its purpose is to consider history through the persons, much more than through abstract institutions and ideas. This method implies criticism of authenticity, dating of documents, identification of addressees and making-out of prosopographic files. Codicology and philology are fundamental. Friendship, ascetism, communion, heresiology, classical culture and evergetism are the framework of this history, which also affects Rome, Milan, Gauls, with regard to Asia Minor and Syria. In this 770 pages' cursive commentary, basil and his correspondents live again in front of us, many of them having shared in the spiritual weaving of the civilization's community we stay in. Synoptical tables, appendices, bibliography, indices and maps close the work
