Aquí se narra la historia delNuevo Mundo» desde su descubrimiento hasta 1575. El autor nació en Toledo en 1514 y, tras un periodo en la universidad de Salamanca, fue a vivir a México en 1550 donde frecuentó el entorno de la corte y en particular el de los altos funcionarios de la Iglesia. Catedrático y después rector de la recién fundada Universidad de México. Cervantes de Salazar escribió por encargo del Rey esta crónica que, además de narrar los hechos históricos, permite conocer el punto de vista del poder y toda la retórica universitaria de la época
