9 editions published between 1999 and 2003 in English and Spanish and held by 334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fascinating and well-researched account of the efforts by the three Colombian presidents who ruled during the so-called 'Liberal Republic' (1930-46) to develop and incorporate the vast expanses of territory to the east of the Andes known commonly as the Llanos. Concludes that although some progress was made in the more accessible departments of Meta, Arauca, and Casanare, the reforms 'did not change the basic structure of the Llanos frontier or its relationship to the highlands as it had been developing over the previous three centuries' (p. 216). Instead, the advent of the Violencia largely halted efforts and reinforced status of eastern Colombia as a haven for people fleeing from conflict elsewhere. Essential reading for anyone wishing to better understand why the Llanos became the focus of the Colombian drug trade and the main stronghold of the country's largest guerrilla force"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58

La indianidad = The indigenous world before Latin Americans by Hernán Horna( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"To arrive at an authentic ethnohistory of Amerindians and to understand the multi-dimensional nature of the ancient indigenous world, historians must rely on the work of archeologists, anthropologists, and linguists, who are constantly announcing new discoveries. They must also reexamine Spanish and Portuguese texts written in the early years of conquest and settlement from an essentially Eurocentric point of view to uncover the Indian voices beneath the surface. New evidence is emerging to challenge old notions of native Americans as "noble savages" living in an Eden-like paradise, or isolated, primitive people quickly defeated by "superior" Europeans."

Each essay in the volume illuminates the recipro-cal influences of the 'pioneer' culture and the 'frontier' culture, as they contend with each other and their physical environment. The transformative power of frontiers gives them special interest for hist
