Cooperative learning in the classroom by David W Johnson( Book )

12 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in Spanish and English and held by 582 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides specific strategies for the classroom teacher beginning to use cooperative learning or improving the use of cooprative learning. It explains conceptually what cooperative learning is and what makes it work. Cooperative learning is presented as a technique that helps raise the achievement of all students; helps build positive relationships among students; and gives students experiences necessary for healthy social, psychological, and cognitive development. Cooperative learning replaces the mass-production, competitive organizational structure of most classrooms and schools with a team-based, high-performance organizational structure. In most classrooms, it is recommended that cooperative learning be used 60 to 80 percent of the time. The teacher's role in implementing cooperative learning includes: (1) pre-instructional decisions (selecting instructional materials and objectives, assigning students to groups, arranging the classroom, and assigning roles); (2) taskwork and teamwork (explaining the academic task, structuring positive interdependence, and specifying desired behaviors); (3) executing the cooperative lesson, which includes monitoring students' behavior and providing closure; and (4) post-lesson activities (evaluating the quality and quantity of learning, and analyzing group effectiveness). (Contains 23 references.) (Jdd)

Academic controversy : enriching college instruction through intellectual conflict by David W Johnson( Book )

6 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The thesis of this book is that intellectual conflict is an important and powerful instructional tool which should become part of day-to-day student life in colleges and universities. Properly structured academic controversy results in increased achievement, better problem-solving and decision-making skills, more positive interpersonal skills, and greater social competence and self-esteem. In eight chapters, the book covers such topics as: what constructive conflict is; why it is important; avoidance of intellectual conflict; what academic controversy is; the inevitability of controversy; what faculty needs to know to manage controversy; using academic controversy in instruction; how controversy works--process, debate, and concurrence seeking; the instructor's role in structuring academic controversy and creating a cooperative context; preparing a position and required social and cognitive skills; advocating a position (presenting opposing positions and perspectives, caucusing, and challenging and defending a position); making decisions (reversing perspectives, synthesizing, and integrating); and the need for controversy

Historical beginnings, the Federal Reserve by Roger T Johnson( Book )

13 editions published between 1977 and 2010 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The booklet presents an historical narrative of banks and banking events leading to the establishment of the Federal Reserve System in 1914. The document is divided into three chapters. Chapter I discusses attempts to establish a bank before the 20th century, describing the creation of two central banks whose chapters were allowed to lapse, the First Bank of the United States in 1791, and the Second Bank of the United States in 1816. It hypothesizes that the National Banking Act of 1863 was inadequate because it failed to provide a central banking structure and, further, that the financial panics and economic depression which followed this act were triggered by inelastic currency and immobile reserves. Chapter ii details financial reform in the 20th century, concentrating on the activities of the 1908 National Monetary Commission, and the pros and cons of the Aldrich plan of 1911. It also traces how the Pujo hearings investigating the "money trust," and the election of Woodrow Wilson led to the Glass-Willis proposal in 1912. Also described are the introduction of the Federal Reserve bill into Congress in 1913, and the ensuing political struggle, compromises, and final adoption. Chapter iii outlines the establishment of the system, including selection criteria for each of the 12 regional centers, organization of national banks into formal membership, election of local directors, and Wilson's appointment of and Congressional ratification of the Federal Reserve Board. Concluding comments recount how, on November 16, 1914, the Federal Reserve banks opened, without permanent headquarters and with very little business. (Ck)
