Regrettably, while the general populace on both sides of the Atlantic have been exposed to the sensationalism of such projects as the Jesus Seminar and Jesus: The Evidence, no major undertaking has made available to the larger church the representative scholarship of students of Jesus and the Gospels which is both critically responsible and theologically evangelical. The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels has been prepared to meet such needs as these. For students it provides introductory discussions and comprehensive surveys. For pastors and teachers it provides reliable and readable information. For theologians and biblical scholars it provides up-to-date reviews. - Preface

"This highly original commentary on the Gospel of Luke is unique for the way it combines concerns with first-century culture in the Roman world with understanding the text of Luke as a wholistic, historical narrative. Focusing primarily on how each episode functions within Luke's narrative development, Joel B. Green provides countless fresh perspectives on and new insights into the Third Gospel. His extended examination of Luke's literary art and Luke's narrative theology allows the Evangelist to address clearly and convincingly both ancient and contemporary readers."--BOOK JACKET

The theology of the gospel of Luke by Joel B Green( Book )

19 editions published between 1995 and 2001 in English and Italian and held by 613 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Gospel of Luke, often mined for information about the life of Jesus, is also one of the earliest Christian examples of narrative theology. Unlike some writers of New Testament books, Luke has engaged in the theological task by shaping a narrative representation of the coming and mission of Jesus. In doing so, he goes to great lengths to ground the work of Jesus in the continuing story of God's redemptive plan, especially witnessed in the Scriptures, and he also emphasises the ongoing character of that story, with the result that Luke's audience is challenged to discern the purpose of God in order that they may embrace it and order their lives around it. This exploration of the way in which Luke accomplishes his theological task in the first century is both informative and illuminating for contemporary readers seeking approaches to cultural criticism and constructive theology today

Recovering the scandal of the cross : atonement in New Testament & contemporary contexts by Mark D Baker( Book )

13 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The cross is the defining symbol of the Christian faith. Yet two thousand years of Western art and architecture and culture have blinded us to what was most obvious to first-century eyes-- the utter scandal of the cross. The Roman cross was first and foremost an instrument of cruel, shameful and violent execution. Yet early Christians quickly recognized the atoning significance of the cross of Christ, and it resonated deeply with their experience of salvation. But the cross remained a blessing framed by scandal, an epochal and yet mysterious event, irreducible to a single formulation. As Green and Baker demonstrate, the New Testament displays a rich array of interpretations of the cross. But for many Christians today, not only has the true scandal of the cross been obscured, the variety of its New Testament interpretations have been reduced to subpoints in a single, controlling view of the atonement. Tragically, the way in which the atonement is frequently and popularly expressed now poses a new scandal, one that is foreign to the New Testament and poses needless obstacles to twenty-first-century people and cultures. The authors explore how the atonement has been understood within a variety of contemporary contexts-- both Western and non-Western-- and show how we can enter into the thoroughly Christian mission of restating the saving scandal of the cross in our multicultural world of the twenty-first-century

Body, soul, and human life : the nature of humanity in the Bible by Joel B Green( Book )

8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Are humans composed of a material body and an immaterial soul? This view is commonly held by Christians, yet it has been undermined by recent developments in neuroscience. How much of Christian theology is built on views of humanity that modern science has proved to be untenable? Exploring what Scripture and theology teach about issues such as being in the divine image, the importance of community, sin, free will, salvation, and the afterlife, Joel Green argues that a dualistic view of the human person is inconsistent with both science and Scripture--From publisher description
