Confessions of an alien hunter : a scientist's search for extraterrestrial intelligence by G. Seth Shostak( Recording )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the first Martian "canals" were charted in 1877, space aliens have captivated skygazers, night travelers, and television watchers worldwide. Polls show that nearly half of all Americans believe in extraterrestrials, and many are convinced they've visited Earth. A fair number of scientists also suspect that aliens exist, and for decades they've been seriously searching -- using powerful antennas and computers to scan for radio waves coming from other star systems. This engaging memoir reveals the true story of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), and discloses what we may very soon discover. Chronicling the program's history, SETI senior astronomer Seth Shostak assures us that if there is sentient life in the universe, we are within decades of picking up its signal. Methodically busting urban legends about alien crash landings, crop circles, and the like, Shostak pits scientific truth against speculation and delivers important news on the state of our knowledge

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1977 two unmanned spacecraft were launched to explore the universe. Today Voyager 1 and 2 have reached the far side of our solar system, fourteen billion kilometres from Earth. In the hope that they would encounter intelligent, extra-terrestrial life forms, each craft was equipped with "The Message of Mankind, a 'a gold plated record containing a 'complete' description of mankind and of our planet Earth - a selection of sound bites, compositioins, pictograms and photographic images
Murmurs of Earth : the Voyager interstellar record by Carl Sagan( Book )

2 editions published between 1992 and 2003 in Polish and English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Preface: On August 20th and September 5th, 1977, two extraordinary spacecraft called Voyager were launched to the stars. After what promises to be a detailed and thoroughly dramatic exploration of the outer solar system from Jupiter to Uranus between 1979 and 1986, these space vehicles will slowly leave the solar systems - emissaries of the Earth to the realm of the stars. Affixed to each Voyager craft is a gold-coated copper phonograph record as a message to possible extra-terrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecraft in some distant space and time. Each record contains 118 photographs of our planet, ourselves and our civilization; almost 90 minutes of the world's greatest music; and evolutionary audio essay on "The Sounds of Earth"; and greetings in almost sixty human languages (and one whale language), including salutations from the President of the United States and the Secretary General of the United Nations. This book is an account, written by those chiefly responsible for the contents of the Voyager Record, of why we did it, how we selected the repertoire, and precisely what the record contains
RESEARCH IN IONOSPHERIC PHYSICS( Book )

2 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Summary Technical Report No. 11 summarizes the research at the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory from 1 February 1967 - 31 July 1967. The report includes discussion of work on the facility, brief discussions of the various research programs, a list of publications and personnel, and a table summarizing accomplishments. Ionospheric studies include measurements of the photoelectron flux, collection of double-pulse data, estimates of ion-neutral collision frequencies, correlations of meteor activity and nighttime E-region electron density, observations of traveling ionospheric disturbances using phase-path sounders and backscatter dish simultaneously, and F-region transport, density gradients, content, and slab thickness. The radar astronomy studies include observations of Venus, Mercury, and the Sun; and dual-frequency lunar observations at 10mus pulse widths. In radio astronomy, the research includes lunar occultation of cosmic radio sources, measurement of apparent angular size of radio sources with two telescopes separated by thousands of miles and not connected electrically, program for locating the positions of a large number of radio sources rapidly, observations of planetary scintillations, and tests of observations at the OH line.
