The Empire State : a history of New York ( Book )
8 editions published between 2001 and 2005 in English and held by 663 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"New York now has a new, comprehensive history book that chronicles the state through centuries of change. An illustrated volume, The Empire State begins in the early seventeenth century (when the region was still populated solely by Native Americans) and concludes at the year 2000, by which time people from all over the world had made the state their home. Throughout the book, politics, economics, culture, and social history all are emphasized, as are contributions made by ethnic groups and women." "The Empire State serves as a successor to A History of New York State, for many years the standard one-volume account of the region but today outdated and long out of print. Now students, scholars, and history enthusiasts will find thorough and fascinating coverage in The Empire State."--BOOK JACKET

An amazing grace : John Thornton and the Clapham Sect by Milton M Klein ( Book )
3 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book is a complete biography of John Thornton (1720-1790), an English merchant and businessman who was reputed to be the wealthiest man in Britain in the eighteenth century and, next to one other, the richest man in Europe. His wealth began with an inheritance of [pound]100,000 from his father, also a merchant, and upon his death his estate was at [pound]600,000. During his lifetime, it was probably greater, but he gave away much of it, making him also the most generous philanthropist of his age."--BOOK JACKET
A parameterized procedure for determining real height from ionograms by use of generalized parabolic profiles by Milton M Klein ( Book )
3 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In previous reports an analytic procedure was developed for determining real heights from ionograms by directly solving the integral relation between real height and virtual height. The real height could then be obtained by a direct integration of the virtual height over the range of frequencies encountered. In a later report the method was applied to typical ionograms; the required integration being performed numerically. In addition, a simplified procedure was developed in which and ionogram could be fitted to a parametric series of polynomials and the integration required for determination of real height performed analytically. This report generalizes this procedure by modeling electron density provides in terms of a parameterized series of generalized parabolic profiles. The profiles are then converted to virtual height or ionogram form. The real height corresponding to a given ionogram is obtained by comparison of the ionogram with the parameterized profiles. Since the real height for a given paramterized profile is related in a very simple way to its virtual height, the integration process required for the previous polynominal method is hereby avoided. In additions, since the parabolic profile has a vertical slope at the maximum electron density, it provides a better fit to ionospheric data than a polynomial

A method for determining the point of lift-off and modified trajectory of a ground-based heated turbulent planar jet in a co-flowing wind by Milton M Klein ( Book )
3 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Experimental and theoretical programs are being conducted to aid in the development of an operational Warm Fog Dispersal System using ground based heat sources. To help determine optimum heat and thrust combinations for the system, investigations have been made of the buoyant motion of heated turbulent jets in co-flowing; that is, same direction ambient winds. To take account of the ground effect, an analysis has been made of the experimental data for the planar jet at the point of lift-off in terms of the local Froude number at this point. From this correlation a procedure has been developed for determining the lift-off point, using the ambient wind and initial velocity and temperature of the jet as input variables. A new jet trajectory may now be easily calculated with only a simple modification of the original method in which the ground effect was ignored
Scattering of HF radio waves by a spherical electron cloud by Milton M Klein ( Book )
4 editions published between 1969 and 1971 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The scattering of HF radio waves by a spherical electron cloud in the presence of a magnetic field has been obtained in ray optics approximation for a Gaussian distribution of electron density. The objective of this report is to provide knowledge and understanding of the effect of the earth's magnetic field upon the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the ionosphere, ionospheric irregularities, and artificial electron clouds. It is thus directed to the furnishing of data, together with criteria, for the solution of Air Force problems of discrimination, detection, and communication. (Author)
Interaction of a turbulent planar heated jet with a counterflowing wind by Milton M Klein ( Book )
2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Experimental and theoretical programs are being conducted to aid in the development of an operational warm fog dispersal system using momentum-driven ground-based heat sources. In previous investigations, the wind was in the same direction as the jet (coflowing). The present investigation is concerned with a jet opposite in direction to the ambient wind (counterflowing or opposing jet). A model for calculating the dynamic characteristics of a cold counter-flowing jet has been extended to take account of the effect of heating upon the jet. The effect of buoyancy upon the motion of the jet will be presented in a subsequent report
Calculation of the buoyant motion of a turbulent planar heated jet in an opposing air stream by Milton M Klein ( Book )
3 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A broad experimental and theoretical program is being conducted to aid in the development of an operational warm fog dispersal system which utilizes momentum driven ground based heat sources. To help determine optimum heat and thrust combinations for the system, investigations are being made of the buoyant motion of heated turbulent jets both coflowing (wind and jet in the same direction) and counterflowing (wind and jet opposite). The investigation of the coflowing jet has been completed and in addition a model has been developed from which the dynamic characteristics of a heated counterflowing jet in the absence of buoyancy can be calculated. The present investigation is concerned with the effect of buoyancy upon the motion of a counterflowing jet. The lower portion of the trajectory, which has been calculated by the present model, is in fair to good agreement with the corresponding experimental curve, the calculated curve tending to be somewhat higher than that obtained experimentally. The calculated upper part of the trajectory, obtained from a model which gives the deflection of a jet in a crosswind, is in good agreement with experiment
A Method for direct determination of real height from virtual height data for the auroral region of the ionosphere by Milton M Klein ( Book )
3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
As part of an effort to determine electron density profiles in the auroral region of the ionosphere, a method has been developed for directly calculating real height from virtual height data obtained at high latitudes. The essential ingredient of the method is the representation of the curved portion of the ordinary ray dispersion curve by an analytic form which reduces the virtual height - real height integral relation to a form of Abel's integral equation. Numerical checks indicate that the present method gives an accurate representation of the dispersion curve. The correctness of the present procedure has been verified for the case of a linear electron density profile. The present method will be applied to the numerical calculation of real height electron density profiles in the auroral region from virtual height data. The accuracy and convenience of the present method will be assessed by comparison of the results with those obtained from standard programs. (Author)
