Im Herbst 1814 notierten sich Ludwig Achim von Arnim, seine Frau Bettina von Arnim und deren Bruder Clemens Brentano auf dem Arnimschen Gut Wiepersdorf "Anekdoten, die wir erlebten und hörten", wie Arnim am 23. Oktober an Savigny schrieb. Achim erinnerte sich an seine Grosseltern, Bettina erzählte Episoden, deren Zentralfigur ihre Grossmutter Sophie von La Roche ist, Clemens Brentano berichtete über Aussenseiter seiner Familie und ein Erlebnis zur Zeit der Jenaer Romantik. Die Wiepersdorfer Anekdotenschreiber konzentrierten sich auf charakteristische Individualitäten und kuriose Begebenheiten, ungezwungene oder auftrumpfende Verhaltensweisen. Was unter der historischen Oberfläche lag, die von der offiziösen Memoirenliteratur geglättet worden war, deckte die anekdotische Mitteilungsweise mitunter subversiv als geheime Geschichte auf, die für die Verfasser die eigentliche war. Die bisher grossenteils unbekannten Texte werden erstmals in ihrem zuvor unerkannten Zusammenhang in der originalen Orthographie und Interpunktion wiedergegeben, in ihren Einzelheiten und Zusammenhängen möglichst detailliert und informativ erläutert

This volume contains letters to and from Arnim originating from the time of the preparation, publication and early reception of the first volume of "Des Knaben Wunderhorn". Arnim|#x00B4;s main correspondent during these two years was Clemens Brentano. Also of key importance are the correspondence with Brentano|#x00B4;s wife Sophie, nèe Mereau, and his sister Bettina as well as the letters to Goethe. In almost all cases the handwritten letters are the basis for the texts, which have been edited and annotated with great accuracy
