Experience and expression : Wittgenstein's philosophy of psychology by Joachim Schulte( Book )
18 editions published between 1992 and 2003 in English and held by 469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The writings preserved in Wittgenstein's manuscripts from 1945 to 1949, after he had completed the first part of Philosophical Investigations, chiefly concern the nature of certain psychological concepts. In this book Joachim Schulte uses these manuscripts - not the selections from them published so far - as a basis for reconstructing the central arguments and conceptual elucidations developed by Wittgenstein during that period. One of the principal subjects is the connection between instinctive reactions, linguistic and non-linguistic context, and mastery of a technique. This connection is explored through clarification of the concepts experience, sensation, and understanding - a clarification which provides illuminating contributions to the philosophy of psychology, aesthetics, and the theory of meaning. Wittgenstein's thoughts on the logic of language and his reflections on psychological concepts are closely knit. This is shown by his discussion of Moore's paradox, which sheds new light both on the limits of logical analysis and on certain curious features of the concepts believe, assume, and assert. The original German edition of this book was widely applauded as an outstanding work of scholarship offering unique and valuable insights. By translating it into fluent and limpid English, and at the same time enriching it with various amendments and additions, Dr Schulte has brought an important work to a wider scholarly community

Ethics and the will : essays by Friedrich Waismann( Book )
5 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The contribution made by the Vienna Circle to ethics and the philosophy of action is increasingly being recognized. Here two previously unpublished pieces by Moritz Schlick and his pupil Josef Schächter set the scene, showing how ethics is not dependent on metaphysics but does require a sensitivity to strata of language other than that of science. Schächter (author of Prolegomena to a Critical Grammar, also in the VCC, and now doyen of educational philosophers in Israel) further develops this ethical theme in a too little known study of pessimistic dicta that he published in 1938. He succeeds (without ever assenting to it) in giving sense to the idea that it were better for a man never to have been born. The bulk of the book is devoted to two works by Friedrich Waismann, probably written not long after his emigration to England, also in 1938. There are a paper on ethics and science, which defends the Wittgensteinian view that morality is something one cannot defend, but only profess, and (itself more than half the volume) a treatise on will and motive, where the influence of Wittgenstein is mediated by that of Ryle and where many points in modern theory of action are anticipated with the author's usual sensitivity both to language and to the complexity of the human situation. (Joachim Schulte recently edited these two works in the original German, otherwise they have remained unpublished). This valuable addition to the VCC should illuminate both the history of the Circle and the kind of reflection on language and action which dominates the practical philosophy of our own day

Philosophische Untersuchungen : kritisch-genetische Edition by Ludwig Wittgenstein( Book )
10 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in German and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lectures on the history of political philosophy by John Rawls( Book )
2 editions published in 2008 in German and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
