2 editions published in 2000 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Part I : Adriano Banchieri : Man of the Church, Man of Letters ; an analysis of extracts from his works and Lettere Armoniche, compared to the Maximes of the Jesuit Baltasar Gracian. Teaching considered as an art of caution and balance. Pedagogics; morals, musical Aesthetics. By way of introduction to a restitution of Il Virtuoso Ritrovo Accademico, and in order to outline a suggested dramatic reading, I have attempted to recover the essential aspects of its author's profile. To seek the spirit which inspires Banchieri's work means considering his monactic conditions, his religious education, his love for the language of Bologna and the ironic regard he has for the surrounding society. Part II : Scenic or Academic Madrigals : collections to keep inactivity away. ll Virtuoso Ritrovo Accademico : a collection of canzonettas which suggest a staged performance. Proposal for a dramatic interpretation. The literary world of the Virtuoso. While it is necessary to refer to the Madrigal collections for a better understanding of the Commedia Armonica, the opposite is also true and the comparative analysis of these two forms of one genre helps our knowledge of both. In the light of the preceding considerations concerning the evolution of the madrigal on the one hand and the development of the pastoral poem on the other, one can only conclude that ll Virtuoso Ritrovo Academico brings together in an exemplary way the main characteritics of the "Academic Entertainment" Annex Part III : Il Virtuoso Ritrovo Academico : édition and restitution

2 editions published in 2002 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2005 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The detailed study of the french periodical Mercure galant over 75 years reveals a variety of aspects of opera from J.B. Lully to J.P. Rameau. In a rich variety of articles accessible to the general public dealing with venues, authors, dramatic art forms and critical acclaim, the magazine reflects the history of music during this period and provides a valuable record for us today. While this study portrays a musical portrait of the period 1672-1748, an attempt has also been made to go beyond the "official" face which the magazine embodies through its generous critical acclaim and appreciate analogous and less apparent facets which illustrate the public's taste for Opera (royal Academy of music) and the Court. Data have been cross referenced to shed light on both the evolution of opera during this period as well as the magazine's standpoint on the major aesthetic debats of the day : the dissidence between Ancients and Moderns; the taste for Italian music; opera as literary or as musical genre. The Mercure galant had a number of different editors over this period, most of whom where men of theatre: it is of interest to read what they had to say and to bear in mind what they did not say in order to understand the magazine's editorial line and to judge its strengths and weaknesses
