The central banks by Marjorie Deane( Book )

17 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 842 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Such central banks as the Bank of England, the Bundesbank in Germany, and the Federal Reserve affect our lives substantially. They control interest rates, which affect mortgages and other forms of borrowing; they oversee commercial banks; and they monitor nations' currency relationships. These institutions are becoming even more important, as headlines suggest. The struggle to coordinate interest rates and inflation levels with growth while propping up domestic currencies has taken on political overtones. Yet the professionals who run the central banks are largely invisible powerbrokers with mounting worldwide political influence. What they do remains a mystery to most people. Drawing on extensive research and numerous interviews, Marjorie Deane and Robert Pringle scrutinize these powerful institutions to shed light on how they operate and the individuals who run them. In comprehensible language, they explore the banks' origins and histories, discuss monetary policy, and consider the implications of events like the recent formation of the European Central Bank and the American savings and loan debacle. The Central Banks is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand domestic and international finance and how the world's money system works
Inside the Bundesbank by Stephen F Frowen( )

8 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Bundesbank is one of the world's most powerful and successful central banks, outstanding for its independence in the conduct of monetary policy and for its success in the achievement of relative price stability virtually throughout the post-war era. This collection of essays by the President of the Bundesbank, by former and present Board members and by Heads of Department within the Bundesbank offer a rare inside insight into its operations. The individual contributions to this volume explain the historical, legal and institutional basis of German internal and external monetary policy and highlight the goals of the German central bank and its role in the economy as a whole. The role of the Deutschmark as one of the leading international transaction, reserve and investment currencies is discussed in detail. Students of monetary management and the banking community throughout the world will benefit greatly from a study of this unique volume

Governors on the record( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the past ten years, on behalf of Central Banking, I have conducted interviews with leading central bankers of our time. Together, these interviews constitute a running commentary of some of te most momentous political and financial upheavals of the 1990s. On the geo-pilitical front these range from the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union and the transistion to Democracy of the many successor states, to the German monetary reunification in 1990, and emrace the gestation and birth of the Economic and Monetary Union [EMU] in Europe. On the financial front, the topics range from the BBCI scandal in 1991 and the Barings collapse in 1995 to the Asian and Russian currency crisis in 1997-99. But these interviews acquire a special interest because they are with people who have been called upon not just ot observe and analyse but also to play a part in events. That is why we thought it convenint to bring these together in one volume
