Gusii : FL08( )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gusii or Abagusii is the people's name for themselves. The Gusii are divided into seven clan clusters: Kitutu (Getutu), North Mugirango, South Mugirango, Majoge, Wanjare (Nchari), Bassi, and Nyaribari. Gusiiland is located in western Kenya, 50 kilometers east of Lake Victoria. This collection of 32 English language documents deals with the Gusii people of Kisii District in southwestern Kenya. The major time span covered is approximately one hundred years ranging from about 1900 to 2001, with a focus on the years of 1950-1976. Only one study in this collection (Hakansson, 1994) deals with the pre-colonial period (i.e., pre-1907); specifically with the relationship between agricultural production and grain and cattle exchange. Two studies provide some degree of general ethnographic coverage; these are LeVine 1966 and 1994. In addition the LeVines (Robert and Sarah) provide a wealth of information on infant and child care and development. Other ethnographic topics covered in this collection are: bride-wealth as a significant feature of Gusii marriage arrangements in Mayer, 1950 and Hakansson, 1988 and 1990; kinship in Mayer, 1949 and 1965; witchcraft and sorcery in LeVine, 1963 and Ogembo, 2001; gender in Hakansson and LeVine, 1997, and Hakansson, 1994; and sex offenses and social control in LeVine, 1959 and 1980. Eight documents are from the text, Child Care and culture: Lessons from Africa

Authority, Rules, and Aggression. a Cross-National Study of Children's Judgments of the Justice of Aggressive Confrontations. Part Ii. Final Report by Leigh Minturn( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document is Part ii of an extensive cross-cultural project which investigated the socialization patterns of children into the compliance systems of society, and focuses upon aggressive behavior and compliant relationships, particularly in the school. Students were selected from comparable grade levels in six countries - Denmark, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, and the United States. Issues discussed in this document are: (1) perceptions of societal norms on justice or wrongness in the regulation of interpersonal aggression varying by sex of aggressor and victim; and (2) overt compliant or non-compliant behavior in the classroom as evidenced by peer ratings of behavior. Data were gathered by semistructured projective pictures, peer nominations, and interviews. Data were analyzed in terms of sampling variations in demographic variables on psychological variables. Some general finds are that: (1) social class appears to be the most influential variable for positive ratings while sex is most influential for negative ratings; (2) girls exhibit less negative behavior except in India; (3) middle class children are more compliant in the classroom in all countries except India; and (4) both positive and negative ratings are generally unaffected by age. Inequities in Salary Payments to Faculty Women by Leigh Minturn( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report contains comparative statistics for salary payments to men and women in the Arts and Sciences College of the University of Colorado in Boulder. There are overall discrepancies between salaries of men and women of comparable rank, with the size of the discrepancy increasing with rank. Ten percent of the associate professors are women, but only 5 percent of the full professors, indicating that women are "frozen" at the associate level. The argument that women's salaries are low because of inferior performance is refuted by the fact that in no case is a woman earning the lowest salary of her rank. (Af)
