Constructing his art in the same improvisational spirit as the Abstract Expressionist painters, Lipton used innovative techniques and materials, and created metal works that dealt with issues of the post-war world, from nature and flight to the theories of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell
Miracle in the scrap heap : the sculpture of Richard Stankiewicz by Richard Stankiewicz( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 332 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book offers the first comprehensive survey of the art of Richard Stankiewicz (1922-83) and reassesses its place in the art of his time. Stankiewicz's welded sculpture of rusted iron and cast-off steel played an important role in the redefinition of art in New York during the 1950s. Yet, as is the case of several artists who figured significantly in the heady decade when the New York School came to international prominence, the full range of Stankiewicz's art has not been fully appreciated. This publication - accompanying an internationally touring exhibition organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts - provides the first overview of his pioneering "junk sculpture" of the 1950s within the context of the artist's thirty-year career. Although Stankiewicz has been included in important group exhibitions of Assemblage, Neo-Dada, and Abstract Expressionist sculpture, his art has eluded conclusive critical identification." "Following an introduction by Addison Gallery Director Adam D. Weinberg, is an extended critical look at Stankiewicz, his life, and his achievement by Emmie Donadio, who wrote her 1996 doctoral dissertation on the artist. The artist is placed within the twentieth-century European avant-garde tradition in an essay by Jon Wood. Martin Friedman's "Putting It All Together" positions Stankiewicz's work in relation to that of his contemporaries in 1950s New York. The book also includes a narrative chronology, a bibliography, and generous illustrations of key sculptures by the artist."--Jacket
Kathy Vargas : photographs, 1971-2000 by Lucy R Lippard( Book )

4 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Long recognized nationally and internationally, Kathy Vargas' photography honors her multiple social and cultural inheritances in both subject matter and methods. It weaves together Vargas' Huichol and Zapotec heritages, Catholic upbringing, and early exposure to blues, gospel, and rock-and-roll music as inspiration, with an emphasis on "the cycle of life/death/acceptance/consolation/rebirth."" "This full-color volume is the catalog for the artist's first major retrospective, which opens in December 2000 at the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. The catalog features all of the artist's major series, from her early black-and-white street photography taken within walking distance of her family home in San Antonio to the signature multiple-exposures she has been composing in her studio since 1981. Hand-applied color makes each black-and-white photograph unique, whether it is a small individual print or a component of a large-scale installation. The catalog also includes a substantial essay by arts writer Lucy Lippard and an introduction by exhibit curator MaLin Wilson-Powell, plus the photographer's chronology, exhibitions history, and bibliography."--Jacket

"Kent Rush is a prolific artist whose work ranges from intimate still-life collages and elegant paintings on stretched-paper panels to monumentally-scaled silver-gelatin photographs. His hauntingly beautiful and evocative work is the subject of this catalog published in conjunction with the artist's retrospective at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. This catalog beautifully illustrates the richness and depth of Rush's work over the course of nearly thirty years. It includes an essay by Lyle W. Williams, curator of prints and drawings and of the Rush retrospective at the McNay, a bibliography, a glossary, and an appreciation by Garo Z. Antreasian."--Amazon
