Congressman, governor, military leader, and senior statesman -- no person played a longer, more influential, or more varied role in the shaping of Minnesota than Henry Hastings Sibley (1811-91). Yet Sibley's history reveals universal tensions about the duality of the nineteenth century frontiersman who is at once an accommodating trade partner of the Indian/European/Metis worlds and the conquering government official of the ever-expanding West. Rhoda Gilman has spent over thirty years examining Sibley -- through hints and fragments of stories that Sibley himself left in articles, an unfinished autobiography, and scores of family letters -- and uncovers the complexities of a man who embodied these clashing extremes

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From 1972 to 1989 the North Country Anvil was a bellwether of the alternative press and the Midwestern left, reporting with anger, eloquence, and candor on issues that ranged from communes and co-ops and the crisis in agriculture, to Wounded Knee, the rise of feminism, and rural activism. This wide-ranging collection from its pages - essays, articles, stories, poetry, and artwork - constitutes a compelling social history, from post-1960s protest about Vietnam, through the quest for personal liberation via drugs and sex, to the hope for collective and rural solutions to society's urban-based ills. Included here are such diverse voices as Robert Bly, Thomas McGrath, Gerald Vizenor, Barton Sutter and Linda Hasselstrom, as well as extended excerpts from founding editor Jack Miller's long-running columns

Since the time and grade level assigned to state studies vary widely among school districts, the volume makes the materials flexible so they can be combined in a variety of ways. The work is directed toward students in grades 6 and 7, and is divided into three sections. Part 1, "The Story of Minnesota's Past," is a description of the state and a narrative of its history. Part 2, "Going to the Sources," provides case studies based upon original source materials and focuses on developing the skills needed for a sense of history. Part 3 offers a teacher edition including text pages from the other two books, plus a plan of instruction and additional information for teachers. There are 21 chapters and 20 activities with the suggested time for covering them at 32 weeks. The supplementary materials contain 21 worksheets with keys, 20 quizzes with keys and 4 outline maps. One outline map accompanies worksheet 8; another is designed for use with activity 8. The others may be used in a variety of ways. All of the supplementary materials may be reproduced. (EH)
