Introduction to the Mechanics of Deformable Solids: Bars and Beams introduces the theory of beams and bars, including axial, torsion, and bending loading and analysis of bars that are subjected to combined loadings, including resulting complex stress states using Mohr's circle. The book provides failure analysis based on maximum stress criteria and introduces design using models developed in the text. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes fundamentals, including consistent mathematical notation. The author also presents the fundamentals of the mechanics of solids in such a way that the beginning student is able to progress directly to a follow-up course that utilizes two- and three-dimensional finite element codes imbedded within modern software packages for structural design purposes. As such, excessive details included in the previous generation of textbooks on the subject are obviated due to their obsolescence with the availability of today's finite element software packages. Continuous fiber composite laminate are known to undergo a substantial amount of complex load-induced damage which can adversely affect component performance. Therefore, it is desirable to develop new models capable of accounting for the effect of damage on materials properties. The objective of this research is to develop an accurate damage model for predicting strength and stiffness of continuous fiber composite media subjected to fatigue or monotonic loading and to verify this model with experimental results obtained from composite specimens of selected geometry and makeup to be described herein. It is known that large space structures will be subjected to thermomechanical loadings and environmental conditions which are likely to degrade the constitutive properties of the structural materials, thus leading to possible failure of these vehicles. Therefore, it is desireable to develop new analytical models which are capable of accounting for these degraded properties seo that design procedures can be improved. There are three important aspects of such an effort: selection and development oc constitutive models applicable to large space structures, construction of analytical models and experimentation to determine the precise nature of the material parameters to be utilized in the analytical model. These three components of the research must be tied together into a single concise package in order to obtain a useful model. This research project is a three year effort to develop an analytical model capable of predicting the response of space structures with degrading material properties under quasi-static as well as dynamic cyclic thermomechanical loading conditions.
