Industrial archaeology : principles and practice by Marilyn Palmer( )

18 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,984 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Industrial archaeology is defined as the study of the rangible evidence of social, economic and technological development of the period since industrialisation, generally the last 250 years. Marilyn Palmer and Peter Neaverson argue that industrial archaeology must be firmly placed within the context of mainstream archaeology, and be set within a methodological framework. The authors argue that conventional archaeological techniques and concepts need to be modified because of the nature of physical evidence and the availability of documentary sources. The analysis of sites and structures needs to extend beyond the functional to the cultural; only then will the complex nature of industrialisation be revealed in a more meaningful way than that derived from documents alone
Industry in the landscape by Marilyn Palmer( )

22 editions published between 1994 and 2011 in English and held by 1,223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Two hundred years of industry have transformed the British landscape. This book enables the reader to reconstruct the landscape of past industry. The authors are industrial archaeologists of national standing whose concern is to use surviving material evidence and contemporary sources to study the former working conditions of men and women. Comprehensive in coverage, the book examines fuels, metals, clothing, food, building and transport. It makes clear the tangible elements which form the basis for recreation of past landscapes and demonstrates both their function and the context in which they should be considered."--BOOK JACKET

Industrial archaeology : a handbook by Marilyn Palmer( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Council for British Archaeology was the first organisation to champion the cause of 'Industrial Archaeology', over 50 years ago. Since the term 'Industrial Archaeology' was first used by the CBA in the late 1950s, the landscape of our industrial towns and cites has changed beyond recognition. Our industrial heritage is all around us, but many of the structures are severely threatened by modern development. This has recently been recognised by English Heritage with the publication of their Industrial Heritage at Risk list. Britain has long been recognised as the cradle of the industrial revolution, and buildings and monuments from industries as diverse as brewing to china clay extraction can be found around the UK. This book considers not only the industries themselves but also the power that drove them, the transport network that distributed the products, and the houses in which the workforce lived. -- Publisher

ECO-ACTIVISM AND SOCIAL WORK : new directions in leadership and group work by Dyann Ross( )

2 editions published between 2019 and 2020 in English and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Social work is called upon to shift from a human-centric bias to an ecological ethical sensibility by embracing love as integral to their justice mission and by extending the idea of social justice to include environmental and species justice. This book presents the love ethic model as a way to do eco-justice work using public campaigns, research, community arts practice and other nonviolent direct action strategies. The model is premised on an active and ongoing commitment to the eco-values of love, eco-justice and nonviolence for the purpose of upholding the public interest. The love ethic model is informed by the stories of eco-activists who used nonviolent actions to address ecological issues such as: pollution; degradation of the environment; exploitation of farm animals; mining industry over-riding First Nation Peoples' land rights, and; human health and social costs related to the natural resource industries, private land developments and government infrastructure projects. Informed by practice insights by activists from a range of eco-justice concerns, this innovative book provides new directions in social work involving transformational change leadership and dialogical group work between interest groups. It should be considered essential reading for social work students, researchers and practitioners, as well as eco-activists more generally"--
