L'homme récapitule en lui toutes les espèces minérales, végétales, animales, mais cette fonction de microcosme n'est que l'image d'une fonction autrement importante, puisqu'elle incombe à sa liberté et non à sa seule nature, celle d'unir entre eux tous les semblables. Tel serait le rôle d'une religion au sens propre du mot, capable de relier, donc d'accorder toutes les opinions, toutes les confessions, tous les dogmes. Cette activité lieuse ne saurait être reconnue qu'à une pia philosophia, susceptible de distribuer tous les degrés de la doxa et de comprendre toutes les formes d'orthodoxies, en les ordonnant à l'Unique, seul inconditionné. C'est l'affaire, selon Marsile Ficin, du platonisme, matrice de toutes les grandes théologies, dont il assume la diversité tout en révélant la secrète unité
