Visionary architects: Boullée, Ledoux, Lequeu by Jean-Claude Lemagny( Book )

8 editions published in 1968 in 3 languages and held by 536 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The drawings and engravings of the French visionary architects Boullee, Ledoux, and Lequeu lie on the nervous cusp of Neoclassicism and hallucination. The three designed vast, impractical monuments, villas and temples, cathedrals and libraries, incorporating motifs from the classical era informed by the new intellectual freedoms of the Enlightenment. The resulting drawings and plans are like nothing done before or since, and their daring has reverberated through to us in the work of such architects as Speer, Graves, Sant'Elia, and Stirling
Atget the pioneer by Jean-Claude Lemagny( Book )

16 editions published in 2000 in English and German and held by 417 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The works of the great French photographer Eugene Atget (1856-1927) are already internationally known through many books. His role as a highly influential pioneer of photography is less well appreciated. This beautiful new book explores Atget's legacy through his own photographs and those of his successors, names who are themselves legends in the history of the art: Berenice Abbott, Hila and Bernd Becher, Bill Brandt, Robert Doisneau, Walker Evans, Michael Kenna, Lee Friedlander, Clarence John Laughlin, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Rene-Jacques, Bruno Requillard, August Sander." "Through a selection of insightful essays and a stunning portfolio of more than 160 photos, Atget's work is juxtaposed with those of later photographers to produce a unique and ground-breaking analysis of a critical strand of photographic history." "During his lifetime Atget's work held a fascination for contemporary Surrealist artists such as Man Ray; later Walker Evans drew on Atget's unflinching views of the Paris backstreets to create his own image of urban life, Cubism too found inspiration in the tightly framed spaces of Atget's Parisian streets." "Publishing for the first time numerous photographs by Atget - including the newly discovered photos of trees in the park at Saint-Cloud - this book also presents texts by experts in the history of photography."--Jacket

Manuel Alvarez Bravo : photopoetry by Manuel Álvarez Bravo( Book )

11 editions published in 2008 in 4 languages and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Over 370 tritone photographs, arranged in broadly chronological order, mark Alvarez Bravo's remarkable eighty-year career. Strikingly poetic and richly resonant, the collection includes iconic images as well as over thirty previously unpublished masterpieces. Urban and rural scenes, still lifes, nudes, religious and vernacular subjects, portraits of luminaries including Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Octavio Paz: all illustrate the peerless acuity of the photographer's eye. Above all, Alvarez Bravo's work celebrates his beloved Mexico, with its indigenous rituals and age-old customs."--Jacket

7 editions published in 1994 in French and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

4 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Manuel Álvarez Bravo : fotopoesia by Manuel Álvarez Bravo( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in Portuguese and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first major retrospective is a powerful tribute to Mexico's most distinguished photographer comprising a selection of iconic photographs and unveiling more than twenty previously unpublished images from his eighty-year career. Featuring landscapes, still-lifes, rural and urban scenes, religious and vernacular subjects, as well as portraits of luminaries such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Carlos Fuentes, and Octavio Paz, the work is chronologically arranged and richly varied. Three illuminating essays reveal the poetry of Bravo's photographs from his use of light and form to his fascination with dreams and his preoccupation with death. This definitive monograph commemorates 110 years of the birth of Manuel Alvarez Bravo. A decade after his death, the exhibition Fotopoesa is a very ambitious project curated by Sergio Burgi that has been widely accepted in Brazil. The exhibition included a reduced set of images by Gautherot of Mexico taken between 1936 and 1937 commissioned by the Muse de l'homme in Paris to document the country and where he met Álvarez Bravo, an event that would mark his later photographic production. The collection is part of the holdings of the IMS in Brazil
