Cave temples of Mogao : art and history on the silk road by Roderick Whitfield( Book )

7 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 605 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Mogao cave temples on China's fabled Silk Road constitute one of the world's most significant sites of Buddhist art. Founded by monks as an isolated monastery in the late fourth century, Mogao evolved into a spiritual and artistic mecca renowned throughout China and central Asia. Here, in some five hundred caves carved into rock cliffs at the edge of the Gobi Desert, was preserved the pageantry of one thousand years - miles of wall paintings, more than two thousand statues, magnificent works on silk and paper, and tens of thousands of ancient manuscripts." "Cave Temples of Mogao tells the fascinating story of this remarkable site and of nearby Dunhuang, desert gateway to China. It also describes the long-term collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and Chinese authorities to preserve the Mogao shrines."--Jacket

Masterpieces of Chinese painting, 700-1900 by Hongxing Zhang( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Painting has always been regarded by the Chinese as a supreme art, equal to those of poetry and philosophy. But dating back over 2,500 years, many Chinese paintings were made to be viewed just for a few hours or weeks. As a result, the masterpieces of the form have been seen very rarely, and then only by a few. This spectacular book accompanies a major V & A exhibition that brings together some of the world's greatest paintings on silk and paper--many of which will be displayed only for a short time. All the paintings are reproduced in full, together with enlarged details. Written by international scholars, the book explains the background against which Chinese painters worked, as well as the original social context of the paintings and their display in the palace, temple, studio, or tomb. Essays on technique, materials, and collecting describe why these paintings are considered masterpieces today."--

Dictionary of Korean art and archaeology = Hanʼguk munhwajae yongŏ sajŏn by Roderick Whitfield( Book )

15 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and Korean and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"These days, the opening of doors between states through international events is gaining momentum and through these exchanges, the breadth, diversity, and quality of cultural and artistic endeavors are growing. In this respect, I cannot emphasize enough the meaning and value of managing the unique and precious cultural resources we inherit from our ancestors and sharing them outside of our own country. Leading museums around the world have established permanent galleries of Korean art, but curators have no access to adequate reference materials when writing descriptions for exhibits. Furthermore, there are very few worthwhile texts for students and scholars of Korean culture, even in Korea. By providing English definitions and explanations of terminology for cultural and fine arts artifacts, it is our wish that this book will promote wider understanding of Korean culture and support scholarly research. The 2,824 entries in this dictionary are classified into four major categories: archaeology, architecture, art history, and folklore. We have tried to select those terms that are regularly used in ordinary texts and guides to cultural artifacts."
