Museum Mesdag : catalogue of paintings and drawings by F. W. G Leeman( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Over a 30-year period, the Hague marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag 1831-1915 purchased over 800 works of art. The outcome of this feverish activity can still be found in the museum he founded in The Hague. Built by Mesdag in 1887 as an annex to his house and studio in order to accommodate his growing collection, it was donated to the Dutch state in 1903 together with its contents of more than 360 paintings and drawings. Roughly half the works were by his contemporaries of the Hague School, while most of the rest are by artists of the School of Barbizon and French Realists: 12 Corots, 25 Daubignys, 12 Rousseaus, 7 Millets, 7 Courbets, and numerous works by Diaz, Dupre, Troyon, Decamps. It has been hailed as the most important Barbizon collection outside France. Being a painter's choice, the collection is idiosyncratic in its preference for sketchy paintings that show the artists engaged in the process of creation."--BOOK JACKET

De aquarel : Nederlandse meesters van de negentiende eeuw by Terry van Druten( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in Dutch and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The nineteenth century was the heyday of the Dutch watercolor. This book shows how this technique in the course of the centuries developed from the 'colored drawings' of romantic painters like Koekkoek and Nuyen and the watercolor paintings of the Hague School. Famous artists like Mauve, Weissenbruchstraat, Joseph and Isaac Israels and Breitner brought the medium to full maturity. An important role in this development was played by the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij, which focused specifically on the promotion of watercolor as an independent medium. As founder and chairman for years, Hendrik Willem Mesdag played a key role. He not only painted watercolors himslef, but also collected works of others. His collection, preserved in The Mesdag Collection, and the rich collection of watercolors that Teylers Museum brought together in the nineteenth century, together with some of the finest watercolors from other collections, are the focus of this book

In the late nineteenth century, the Dutch artist and collector, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, amassed an eclectic collection of Japanese artefacts, ranging from samurai swords and colourful earthenware to bronze cranes and majestic altar vases. At the time, decorative art from Japan was all the rage. This richly illustrated book places Mesdag's collection in a cultural-historical context, paying homage to an idiosyncratic collector and his outstanding collection of Japanese applied art.00Exhibition: Mesdagmuseum, The Hague, The Netherlands (07.03.-17.06.2018)
