Paul Halmos celebrating 50 years of mathematics by
John H Ewing(
Book
)
11 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Paul Halmos will celebrate his 75th birthday on the 3rd of March 1991. This volume, from colleagues, is an expression of affection for the man and respect for his contributions as scholar, writer, and teacher. It contains articles about Paul, about the times in which he worked and the places he has been, and about mathematics. Paul has furthered his profession in many ways and this collection reflects that diversity. Articles about Paul are not biographical, but rather tell about his ideas, his philosophy, and his style. Articles about the times and places in which Paul has worked describe people, events, and ways in which Paul has influenced students and colleagues over the past 50 years. Articles about mathematics are about all kinds of mathematics, including operator theory and Paul's research in the subject. This volume represents a slice of mathematical life and it shows how many parts of mathematics Paul has touched. It is fitting that this volume has been produced with the support and cooperation of SpringerVerlag. For over 35 years, Paul has contributed to mathematics publishing as founder and editor of many outstanding series

The ubiquitous quasidisk by
Frederick W Gehring(
Book
)
12 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book focuses on gathering the numerous properties and many different connections with various topics in geometric function theory that quasidisks possess. A quasidisk is the image of a disk under a quasiconformal mapping of the Riemann sphere. In 1981 Frederick W. Gehring gave a short course of six lectures on this topic in Montreal and his lecture notes "Characteristic Properties of Quasidisks" were published by the University Press of the University of Montreal. The notes became quite popular and within the next decade the number of characterizing properties of quasidisks and their ramifications increased tremendously. In the late 1990s Gehring and Hag decided to write an expanded version of the Montreal notes. At three times the size of the original notes, it turned into much more than just an extended version. New topics include twosided criteria. The text will be a valuable resource for current and future researchers in various branches of analysis and geometry, and with its clear and elegant exposition the book can also serve as a text for a graduate course on selected topics in function theory" Back cover

An introduction to the theory of higherdimensional quasiconformal mappings by
Frederick W Gehring(
Book
)
11 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 210 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book offers a modern, uptodate introduction to quasiconformal mappings from an explicitly geometric perspective, emphasizing both the extensive developments in mapping theory during the past few decades and the remarkable applications of geometric function theory to other fields, including dynamical systems, Kleinian groups, geometric topology, differential geometry, and geometric group theory. It is a careful and detailed introduction to the higherdimensional theory of quasiconformal mappings from the geometric viewpoint, based primarily on the technique of the conformal modulus of a curve family. Notably, the final chapter describes the application of quasiconformal mapping theory to Mostow's celebrated rigidity theorem in its original context with all the necessary background. This book will be suitable as a textbook for graduate students and researchers interested in beginning to work on mapping theory problems or learning the basics of the geometric approach to quasiconformal mappings. Only a basic background in multidimensional real analysis is assumed

Quasiconformal mappings and analysis : a collection of papers honoring F.W. Gehring by
Peter L Duren(
Book
)
8 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book comprises a broad selection of expository articles that were written in conjunction with an international conference held to honor F.W. Gehring on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The objective of both the symposium and the present volume was to survey a wide array of topics related to Gehring's fundamental research in the field of quasiconformal mappings, emphasizing the relation of these mappings to other areas of analysis. The book begins with a short biographical sketch and an overview of Gehring's mathematical achievements, including a complete list of his publications. This is followed by Olli Lehto's account of Gehring's careerlong involvement with the Finnish mathematical community and his role in the evolution of the Finnish school of quasiconformal mapping. The remaining articles, written by prominent authorities in diverse branches of analysis, are arranged alphabetically. The principal speakers at the symposium were: Astala, Baernstein Earle, Jones, Kra, Lehto, Martin, Sullivan, and Va"isa"la". Other individuals, some unable to attend the conference, were invited to contribute articles to the volume, which should give readers new insights into numerous aspects of quasiconformal mappings and their applications to other fields of mathematical analysis. Friends and colleagues of Professor Gehring will be especially interested in the personal accounts of his mathematical career and the descriptions of his many important research contributions

Holomorphic functions and moduli : proceedings of a workshop held March 1319, 1986 by
D Drasin(
)
3 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Spring 1986 Program in Geometric Function Theory (GFT) at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) brought together mathe maticians interested in Teichmiiller theory, quasiconformal mappings, Kleinian groups, univalent functions and value distribution. It included a large and stimulating Workshop, preceded by a miniconference on String Theory attended by both mathematicians and physicists. These activities produced interesting results and fruitful interactions among the partici pants. These volumes represent only a portion of the papers that will even tually result from ideas developed in the offices and corridors of MSRI's elegant home. The Editors solicited contributions from all participants in the Program whether or not they gave a talk at the Workshop. Papers were also submit ted by mathematicians invited but unable to attend. All manuscripts were refereed. The articles included here cover a broad spectrum, representative of the activities during the semester. We have made an attempt to group them by subject, for the reader's convenience. The Editors take pleasure in thanking all participants, authors and ref erees for their work in producing these volumes. We are also grateful to the Scientific Advisory Council of MSRI for sup porting the Program in GFT. Finally thanks are due to the National Sci ence Foundation and those Universities (including Cornell, Michigan, Min nesota, Rutgers Newark, SUNY Stony Brook) who gave released time to faculty members to participate for extended periods in this program
