Contadora and the Central American peace process : selected documents by
Bruce Michael Bagley(
Book
)
8 editions published between 1985 and 2018 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The political, economic, and social problems of Central America during the past four years have at times threatened to escalate into a generalized conflict. Intense diplomatic efforts to find peaceful solutions to the crisis, however, have met with only limited success. Negotiations have collapsed amid bitter accusations of intransigence or bad faith, and some have taken place outside of public scrutiny, resulting in widespread confusion that has surrounded the entire peace process. This book is an effort by the Central American and Caribbean Program at the School of Advanced International Studies to shed light on the crucial roles of the Contadora Group (Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela) in forging peace in the region. Containing a collection of nearly one hundred statements, declarations, proposals, resolutions, draft treaties, and official documents, it easily constitutes the most comprehensive reference work on the search for peace in Central America. In order to improve readability, slight adjustments have been made to some of the documents

The Soviet Union and ballistic missile defense by
Bruce Parrott(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Originally published in 1987. In the debate over strategic defense, the Soviet dimension has not been adequately examined. Dr. Parrott's multifaceted discussion of the Soviet approach to ballistic missile defense (BMD) admirably fills that gap. Based on an analysis of Soviet statements and Soviet weaponry, the study surveys Soviet perceptions of the shifting relationship between the superpowers and the effect of BMD on that relationship. The author then traces the evolution of Soviet policies toward ballistic missile defense and the introduction of weapons into space. After exploring the internal budgetary debates that will affect future Soviet decisions on BMD and space systems, the book outlines Soviet responses, political as well as military, to the Strategic Defense Initiative and concludes with recommendations for U.S. policy toward BMD and arms negotiations

New thinking & old realities : America, Europe, and Russia(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 291 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume contains essays that focus on the intertwined themes of thought patterns and political realities examined against the backdrop of a changing Europe. Three essays outline the new thinking of superpowers since 1985: the key changes reflected in Gorbachev's approach to the West; the cost-benefit reasons for his willingness to let East Europe go in 1989 and ways in which the West can become more involved in the region; and the parallel reasons for the decline of U.S. and Soviet influence in the Third World. Other essays show how old realities are emerging at the same time that thought patterns are experiencing change: German-Russian relationship is becoming the Central European reality; the new Europe is being erected on the traditional foundation of connections among Germany, France, and Great Britain; and the old Czech-Polish ties are at the innermost center of the new Europe. ISBN 0-932020-89-5 (pbk.): $13.95
