Artists' books : a critical anthology and sourcebook by Joan Lyons( Book )

25 editions published between 1985 and 1993 in English and No Linguistic content and held by 699 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This anthology is the first in-depth look at artists' bookworks. A series of essays, written by longtime participants in and observers of the field, address the following questions: what are the origins, attributes, and what is the potential of artsists' books; what are their historical precedents; what issues are they addressing; who is making and publishing them? The essays are supplemented by extensive bibliographies and a list of collections."

"Conducted over the course of four decades ... a landmark oral history project comprised of nineteen interviews with pioneer book artists, typographers, and poets ... He discusses the transition from cast metal to digital type with the prime movers in the field: Matthew Carter, Sumner Stone, and Fred Smeijers; and he takes stock of the field of artists' books in wide-ranging conversations with Sandra Kirshenbaum and Joan and Nathan Lyons, while his groundbreaking interviews with Dave Haselwood, Holbrook Teter, Bob Hawley, Walter Hamady, and Graham Mackintosh shed new light on the history of the book in the 20th century"--Back cover blurb
The gynecologist by Joan Lyons( Book )

2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fanciful historic gynecological representations of women are juxtaposed with a contemporary patient / doctor interview, which reveals the authority a traditionally male medical culture holds in describing and prescribing for an individual body; in this case female. Aspects of the text will be familiar to most women. This book was based on several years of research and was in danger of becoming a ponderous document before I edited it down to what I know best--an artist's book. It echos the structure of historical printed books, with its small text block and illuminated margins."

In this collaboratve project, the artists take Beatrice Warde's influential text on typographic design, "The Crystal Goblet," as a point of inspiration from which to examine the book--and the female body--as bodies of knowledge. Also includes a transcription of notes from the four-day meeting at which the content and form of the book were planned
Spine by Joan Lyons( Book )

3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tiré du site de l'auteur Joan Lyons: "We used every book-related bad pun and miserable metaphor we could think of. This piece (actually a tabloid) was made as a handout for the "Independent Art Publishing Conference and Bookfair" at Visual Studies Workshop in 1979. Organized by Don Russell and Helen Brunner, it was a landmark artists' book conference that drew participants from Europe and Mexico as well as an amazing array of book publishers and dealers. It was the first time so many of us gathered in one place."

Artifacts at the end of a decade by Steven Watson( Book )

2 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1979, Steven Watson and Carol Huebner Venezia mailed 200 invitations to artists they had never met with a proposal to contribute to a project regarding the previous decade. The result is Artifacts at the End of a Decade, a book which serves as a time capsule of the cultural zeitgeist of the 1970s. An object in its own right, the book is comprised of 44 unique pieces of photography, ceramics, fiber, print, clothing, painting, and drawing bonded together, bringing together artists such as Martha Rosler, Fab 5 Freddy, Laurie Anderson, Sol LeWitt, Michelle Stuart, Futura, John Ashbery, Robert Wilson, Lucinda Childs, and Robert Kushner, among many others. Created in a limited edition of 100, it can now be found in collections like the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Britain, Hamburger Bahnhopf, Victoria and Albert and Kunstmuseum Den Haag, among others. When the book came out in 1981, art critic John Perreault described it as "an anthology of sorts"."
