Michelangelo drawings : closer to the master by Hugo Chapman( Book )

9 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 788 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most creative and influential artists in the history of art, Michelangelo (1475-1564) was a prolific sculptor, painter, architect, and draftsman whose drawing practice was essential to his work in all media. This important and beautiful book focuses on more than ninety Michelangelo drawings executed in red and black chalk and pen and ink. In the accompanying text, distinguished art historian Hugo Chapman examines the remarkable array of works and discusses how the act of drawing figured prominently in the evolution of Michelangelo's career. An introductory chapter discusses Michelangelo's contemporary fame, his training and choice of techniques, and the role of drawing in the genesis of his paintings, sculptures, and architecture. The author also describes the artist's frugal use of paper, explaining how he often recycled letters and drawings (working on both the front and back of the sheet) throughout his career. Organized chronologically, the book looks at Michelangelo's early development in Florence and Rome, his accomplishments as papal artist for the Sistine Chapel ceiling with its preparatory studies, and his drawings for the tomb of Julius II, the Medici tombs, the Laurentian library, and the Last judgement. The fascinating history of the fate of Michelangelo's drawings after his death is also explored in detail. From pen studies made when Michelangelo was in his early twenties to the visionary Crucifixion scenes carried out shortly before his death six decades later, this essential book testifies to the fundamental importance of drawing in the work of this great Renaissance master.--Book jacket

Piranesi as designer by Cooper-Hewitt Museum( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Renowned as one of the finest printmakers of the eighteenth century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi is best known for his etched views of Rome and its antiquities, as well as for his highly influential suite of drawings entitled Carceri, or Imaginary Prisons. Trained as an architect, Piranesi revolutionized architecture and design through his combination of decorative elements and ornamental motifs from the Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, and Roman styles; yet his work as the designer of interiors and furnishings has been largely uncelebrated. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Piranesi as Designer explores the far-reaching impact of Piranesi's modernist style on three centuries of architecture and design."--Amazon

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 200 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hear the name Andy Warhol and what comes most immediately to mind are iconic images of Campbell's soup cans, the Velvet Underground's ubiquitous banana cover art and quirky colour-adjusted panels of popular cultural icons. But Warhol was also a skilled draftsman, who filled numerous sketchbooks with freehand drawings of still-life objects and friends. 'From Silver Point to Silver Screen' collects more than 100 of these early drawings, dating from as far back as the 1950s

Pierre-Joseph Redouté : botanical artist to the court of France by Pierre Joseph Redouté( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) is the undisputed master of botanical art. His illustrations of flowers occupy the intersection of art and science, and they represent a unique fusion of botanical precision with artistic elegance. This richly illustrated publication presents a wide selection of Redouté's books, drawings and watercolours. Several short essays by Dutch and French specialists deal with different aspects of his art. As court artist to Queen Marie-Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, Redouté drew extraordinary flowers and plants from the Jardin des plantes and the gardens of Malmaison, which made him the darling of Parisian society. Napoleon Bonaparte presented his books as gifts to the crowned heads of Europe, and his pictures illustrated the works of the most eminent scientists of his day. His most famous books, 'Les Liliacées' and 'Les Roses', are among the milestones of botanical literature. Exhibition: Teylers Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (19.1.-5.5.2013)

Drawn from the Antique : artists & the classical ideal by Adriano Aymonino( Book )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This catalogue examines one of the most important educational tools and sources of inspiration for Western artists for over five hundred years: drawing after the Antique. From the Renaissance to the 19th century, classical statues offered young artists idealised models from which they could learn to represent the volumes, poses and expressions of the human figure and which, simultaneously, provided perfected examples of anatomy and proportion. For established artists, antique statues and reliefs presented an immense repertory of forms that they could use as inspiration for their own creations. Through a selection of thirty-nine drawings, prints and paintings, covering more than four hundred years and by artists as different as Federico Zuccaro, Hendrick Goltzius, Peter Paul Rubens, Charles-Joseph Natoire, Henry Fuseli and Joseph Mallord William Turner, this catalogue provides the first overview of a phenomenon crucial for the understanding and appreciation of European art."--Page 2 of cover

De aquarel : Nederlandse meesters van de negentiende eeuw by Terry van Druten( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in Dutch and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The nineteenth century was the heyday of the Dutch watercolor. This book shows how this technique in the course of the centuries developed from the 'colored drawings' of romantic painters like Koekkoek and Nuyen and the watercolor paintings of the Hague School. Famous artists like Mauve, Weissenbruchstraat, Joseph and Isaac Israels and Breitner brought the medium to full maturity. An important role in this development was played by the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij, which focused specifically on the promotion of watercolor as an independent medium. As founder and chairman for years, Hendrik Willem Mesdag played a key role. He not only painted watercolors himslef, but also collected works of others. His collection, preserved in The Mesdag Collection, and the rich collection of watercolors that Teylers Museum brought together in the nineteenth century, together with some of the finest watercolors from other collections, are the focus of this book
