A short history of physics in the American century by David C Cassidy( )

16 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 2,349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As the twentieth century drew to a close, computers, the Internet, and nanotechnology were central to modern American life. Yet the advances in physics underlying these applications are poorly understood and widely underappreciated by U.S. citizens today. In this concise overview, David C. Cassidy sharpens our perspective on modern physics by viewing this foundational science through the lens of America's engagement with the political events of a tumultuous century. --from publisher description
Beyond uncertainty : Heisenberg, quantum physics, and the bomb by David C Cassidy( Book )

20 editions published between 2008 and 2010 in English and held by 1,365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1992, David C. Cassidy's groundbreaking biography of Werner Heisenberg, Uncertainty, was published to resounding acclaim from scholars and critics. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, long-suppressed information has emerged on Heisenberg's role in the Nazi atomic bomb project. In this book, Cassidy interprets this and other previously unknown material within the context of his vast research and tackles the vexing questions of a scientist's personal responsibility and guilt when serving an abhorrent military regime."--Global Books in Print
Uncertainty : the life and science of Werner Heisenberg by David C Cassidy( Book )

15 editions published between 1990 and 1993 in English and held by 1,118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Werner Heisenberg's genius and his place at the forefront of modern physics are unquestioned. His decision to remain in Germany throughout the Third Reich and his role in Hitler's atomic bomb project are still topics of heated debate. UNCERTAINTY is David Cassidy's compelling portrait of this brilliant, ambitious, and controversial scientist. It is the definitive Heisenberg biography, as well as a striking evocation of the development of quantum physics, the rise of Nazism, and the dawn of the atomic age.--

J. Robert Oppenheimer and the American century by David C Cassidy( Book )

13 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in English and held by 891 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The unexplored secret of the American Century, the last 100 years of US history, is the rise of American science, specifically physics. At the heart of that story is J. Robert Oppenheimer, leader of the Manhattan Project that built the atomic bomb. He was a man of contradictions: a scientist who discovered blackholes and then turned his back on cutting edge research; a gentle liberal humanist responsible for the creation of the first real weapon of mass destruction; a genius who founded "scientific militarism" and then let it destroy him. His life story embodies the great conflicts of American society, its genius, its weaknesses, and even its essential morality. How did an aesthete man uninterested in the acquisition of power become the leader of American science, the most powerful research community in the world? And how did he, with all his intellectual and social advantages, lose his power and become regarded by many as an unfulfilled if not failed scientist. While it is biography of a physicist, it is also a history of the 20th century offering insights into the "scientific militarism" behind events on the world stage today
Understanding physics by David C Cassidy( )

22 editions published between 2002 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 783 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Understanding Physics is a completely revised, updated, and expanded e- tion of the Project Physics Course. It is an integrated introductory physics course, developed with funding from the Carnegie Corporation and the Sloan Foundation and with the close cooperation of Springer-Verlag New York. In approach and content, Understanding Physics follows the trail blazed by the earlier versions, but it includes more recent developments in physics and a stronger emphasis on the relationships among physics, technology, and society. We have sought especially to incorporate the salient lessons of recent physics education research and practical experience gained in the classroom. The Audience Understanding Physics is written primarily for undergraduate college s- dents not intending (at least initially) to enter careers in science or en- neering. These may include liberal-arts students, business majors, prelegal, and prospective architecture students. We have found that when the course is taken with laboratory work, it has been deemed suitable by medical schools for premedical students

Farm Hall and the German atomic project of World War II : a dramatic history by David C Cassidy( )

9 editions published in 2017 in English and German and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This gripping book brings back to life the events surrounding the internment of ten German Nuclear Scientists immediately after World War II. Why, with their head start in not only research in nuclear fission but in other technological feats, didn't the Germans succeed in building a nuclear bomb during World War II? Now ..., this book brings to the public ... annotated transcripts of ... declassified intelligence reports from that time. These reports contain verbatim conversations among ten German atomic scientists before, during, and after the atomic bombing of Japan in August 1945 ... The collected papers of Albert Einstein by Albert Einstein( )

in German and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein is one of the most ambitious publishing ventures ever undertaken in the documentation of the history of science. Selected from among more than 40,000 documents contained in the personal collection of Albert Einstein (1879-1955), and 15,000 Einstein and Einstein-related documents discovered by the editors since the beginning of the Einstein Project, The Collected Papers will provide the first complete picture of a massive written legacy that ranges from Einstein's first work on the special and general theories of relativity and the origins of quantum theory, to expressions of his profound concern with civil liberties, education, Zionism, pacifism, and disarmament. The series will contain over 14,000 documents and will fill twenty-five volumes. Sponsored by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Princeton University Press, the Einstein project was located at and supported by Boston University from 1986 to 2000. Currently located at and supported by The California Institute of Technology, the project will continue to make available a monumental collection of primary material. The Albert Einstein Archives are located at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After Volume 1, the papers divide into two series, with the documents in each volume presented in chronological order. One series, the Writings, will include such items as Einstein's published and unpublished articles, lecture and research notebooks, book reviews, patent applications, and available accounts of his lectures, speeches, interviews, and other oral statements. The other series, the Correspondence, will include a wide selection of letters written by and to Einstein, as well as significant documents about him by third parties. The Correspondence volumes will also contain calendars of Einstein's life for the years covered. The two series will be extensively cross-referenced. Every document in The Collected Papers will appear in the language in which it was written, while the introduction, headnotes, footnotes, and other scholarly apparatus will be in English. Upon release of each volume, Princeton University Press will also publish an English translation of previously untranslated non-English documents" --Publisher's website
