The psychology of religion : an empirical approach by Bernard Spilka( Book )

32 editions published between 1985 and 2015 in English and Italian and held by 1,216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The authors synthesize classic and contemporary research on religious thought, belief, and behavior across the lifespan; the forms and meaning of religious experience; the social psychology of religious organizations; and connections to biology, morality, coping, and mental health. As in previous editions, the focus is on scientific work that is moving the psychology of religion into the mainstream of academic psychology, rather than broad interpretative and conceptual discussions. Organized for optimal use in advanced undergraduate- or graduate-level courses, every chapter features thought-provoking quotations, sidebars, and examples that bring key concepts to life."--Jacket
The psychology of religion : theoretical approaches( Book )

10 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Theory in the psychology of religion is in a state of rapid development, and the present volume demonstrates how various positions in this field may be translated into original foundational work that will in turn encourage exploration in many directions. A number of new contributions are collected with previously published pieces to illustrate the diversity of prominent theoreticians' thinking on topics pertinent to the psychology of religion. These essays span the psychoanalytic tradition and its derivatives: motivational, social, cognitive, and developmental frameworks plus the domain of coping and adjustment. Each section concludes with an extensive commentary. This book is a valuable addition to courses in psychology and religious studies. It also will appeal to those professionals and lay audiences interested in how this field is evolving
Religion in psychodynamic perspective : the contributions of Paul W. Pruyser by Paul W Pruyser( Book )

15 editions published in 1991 in English and Undetermined and held by 321 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At his death in 1987, Paul W. Pruyser of the Menninger Foundation was widely recognized as one of America's foremost authorities on the psychology of religion. His book A Dynamic Psychology of Religion set the stage for creative dialogue on the subject. In this volume, two leading practitioners in the field present a compilation of Pruyser's seminal articles, providing an overview of the major themes in Pruyser's thought. Newton Malony and Bernard Spilka evaluate Pruyser's viewpoint and suggest how his position continues to influence the psychology of religion
The psychology of prayer : a scientific approach by Bernard Spilka( Book )

9 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Starting with the question "What is prayer?," the authors address motivational and cognitive underpinnings and emphasize the multidimensionality of this complex religious behavior. They discuss the many forms that prayer takes, with attention to aspects that can be objectively measured. A detailed examination of developmental issues focuses on changes in the meaning and manifestations of prayer from early childhood through old age. The volume addresses a range of clinically relevant topics, including connections among prayer, coping, and adjustment, as well as the role of prayer in family life, romantic relationships, and marriage. The possible physiological and health benefits of prayer are also considered. An entire chapter covers intercessory prayer, which has been studied extensively in recent years."--Jacket

The relationship between talker intelligibility and message familiarity( Book )

1 edition published in 1954 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The study was designed to determine the extent to which talker intelligibility in noise is related to the talker's familiarity with the message to be transmitted. Two groups equated with respect to talker intelligibility were tested under different conditions designed to give the talkers differing degrees of familiarity with the message to be transmitted. One group merely heard the words they were to repeat; the second group received additional cues from multiple-choice answer sheets which provided aids in selecting and pronouncing the words. The data obtained from 92 subjects indicate that the group given visual cues in addition to auditory cues achieved a significantly higher mean intelligibility score than the group who only heard the words to be transmitted.
