Long-Term Implications of Sea Level Change for the Mississippi and Alabama Coastlines : papers, outlines, and abstracts presented in Biloxi, Mississippi, September 27-28, 1990( Book )

1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The issue of an accelerated sea level rise is of critical importance to coastal residents, developers, and managers along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Even small rises in sea level can have far-reaching impacts on the region's generally flat coastal profiles. In some areas of the Mississippi/Alabama coast, small rises in sea level could cause a large horizontal displacement of the apparent shoreline, resulting in new shoreline formation hundreds of feet inland. Prior development of many coastal areas has disrupted natural processes, resulting in increased shoreline erosion; continued development in the coastal zone, coupled with the possibility of elevated water levels, may serve to magnify the consequences of man's activities. It is imperative that decision-makers develop an appropriate management strategy to minimize the effects sea level rise may have on our fragile coastal resources. Local, state, and federal experts were invited to present papers examining the sea level rise phenomenon"--National Sea Grant Library publication website

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Alabama's Bays, Bayous and Beaches Symposium was the third symposium held since 1979 to examine the status of Alabama's coastal waters and to suggest future directions. The first effort, 'Symposium on the Natural Resources of the Mobile Bay Estuary, Alabama', consisted of reports from scientists and managers on what was known about Mobile Bay at the time' . The proceedings of this initial symposium still serve as an important source of information about Mobile Bay and continue to provide a foundation for future studies. The 1987 symposium sought to update the findings of the 1979 symposium and widened the scope of papers to include the economic importance of coastal waters, education programs and habitat restoration. The most recent symposium continued the tradition of scientific and management reports while reaching out to local industry and governments. Water quality, watershed management, government cooperation and citizen involvement were key topics addressed by a variety of papers. The stage was set for a new spirit of cooperation between Baldwin and Mobile counties in managing Alabama's coastal waters"--Introduction

"The Second Symposium on the Natural Resources of the Mobile Bay Estuary was held in February 1987 to share information on research results and management activities concerning the bay, and to address issues related to competing uses of the bay and the real or perceived impacts of those uses. This executive summary condenses information presented at the symposium, and sets forth conclusions and recommendations as summarized by moderators and the symposium steering committee. An overview of current conditions in the Mobile Bay Estuary is provided based on data from a variety of groups, agencies, and organizations, as well as on the authors' interpretations of physical, biological, social, educational and historical interrelationships involving the bay"--National Sea Grant Library publication website
