Unknown boundaries : exploring human evolutionary studies by Robert Foley( )

18 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The past twenty years have seen a resurgence of interest in human evolution in many aspects. A distinction can be made between 'narrow' (general acceptance that human evolution occurred, historically) and 'broad' (evolutionary ideas that stretch much further into all aspects of humanity, past and present) human evolution. The broad perspective is beginning to make its presence felt, for example, through the developments in evolutionary genetics, evolutionary psychology and behavioural ecology. There must, therefore be, among the variety of human adaptations, natures and behaviours, phenomena which are not susceptible to an evolutionary analysis, which are beyond the bounds of evolution. The problem is, however, that we do not really know where that boundary lies. Here, the limits of human evolution are explored by using two approaches: first, finding where humans 'fit' the expectations of evolutionary principles; and second, applying evolutionary methods to particular human contexts, while looking for an evolutionary signal. By following this approach not only will the scope and limits of evolution be mapped, but evolution will return as the main framework for anthropology."--Jacket

The Origins of human behaviour by Robert Foley( )

25 editions published between 1990 and 2014 in English and held by 594 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How can we learn about the evolution of our own species and trace the origins of human behaviour in the distant past? This volume explores the diverse ways in which the evolution of human behaviour can be investigated and confronts the most challenging aspects of the subject. Provides new insights into the process of human innovation and the growth of human intelligence and points the way forward in one of the most swiftly expanding areas of research for modern evolutionary biology and anthropology

"Principles of Human Evolution presents an in-depth introduction to paleoanthropology and the study of human evolution. Focusing on the fundamentals of evolutionary theory and molecular genetics approaches to important questions in the field, this timely textbook will help students gain a perspective on human evolution in the context of modern biological thinking."--Jacket

3 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The recognition that animal behaviour is both variable and extremely responsive to local conditions underlies this range of studies on the socioecology of humans and other mammals, examining in a comparative perspective the problems that face species which live in social groups
Human Paleobiology by Robert B Eckhardt( )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation Human Paleobiology provides a unifying framework for the study of past and present human populations to a range of changing environments. It integrates evidence from studies of human adaptability, comparative primatology, and molecular genetics to document consistent measures of genetic distance among subspecies, species, and other taxonomic groupings. These findings support the interpretation of human biology in terms of fewer number of populations characterized by higher levels of genetic continuity than previously hypothesized. Using this as a basis, Robert Eckhardt goes on to analyze problems in human paleobiology including phenotypic differentiation, patterns of species range expansion, and phyletic succession in terms of the patterns and processes still observable in extant populations. This book will be a challenging and stimulating read for students and researchers interested in human paleobiology or evolutionary anthropology
